I turned and walked away from the entire scene.
“I told you someday you’re going to get your ass kicked because of your mouth,” Jack growled at Ralphie. “And you owe me a beer. And you owe Shayna an apology.”
Without thinking, I called Anna.
I had no idea where she was obviously.
Sleeping in her office?
Or did she go back to her place she shared with that guy?
What if they were working things out?
Or what if he suddenly could get hard and they are-
“Joe?”
“Anna,” I said. “Hey.”
“Joe, what’s wrong? You sound…”
“Angry? Yeah. I am.”
“What’s going on?”
“I’m at a bar and I want to fight someone,” I said. “I want to fight two people.”
“Why are you telling me this?”
“Because I have to. I want to smash their skulls together, Anna.”
“You know you can’t do that.”
“Yes, I can.”
“Then you won’t be playing hockey for a long time. Or ever.”
“I’ve made a ton of money,” I said. “I’m set for life. I’ll retire.”
“Joe…”
“You need to get over here, Anna.”
“What?”
“You heard me. Join me. Talk to me. Keep me from making a bad decision here. Because there are two guys that are pissing me off.”
“This isn’t… I don’t makehouse calls, Joe. You can’t just call me up and demand…”
“I just did,” I said. “What are you going to do, Anna? Are you really going to hang up? Then what? You know you’ll be worried all night. Tossing and turning on your couch in your office. Unless you ran back to theflaccid warrioryou call a boyfriend.”
“That’s not happening,” she said. “There’s no way I would…” She sighed. “You’re messing with me, Joe.”
“Yes, I am. You won’t sleep a wink knowing I’m here alone. And then what happens when you get the call that I’m in jail? That I put two guys through a window this time?”
“It kind of feels like you’re threatening me.”
“Or maybe I’m saving you, Anna. From yourself. From sitting around wherever you are, alone, thinking too much. Because I’m doing the same here. So we can think together. Or just have a drink or two and laugh.”
