“Got a tail,” I murmur into my mic, keeping my voice low so Sadie doesn’t hear. I can sense her nervousness already; no need to add to it. “No one look at them. We need them to believe they’re being stealthy.”

The car is nondescript, exactly the kind of vehicle one would use for a stakeout. A perfect choice for a rat. It’s part of our plan to let them think they’re spying on us, that they have an edge. The spy in the car will see us taking Sadie into the safehouse and report back to Viper and Raptor. They’ll think they’ve got us where they want us.

“Remember, we need them to think they have the advantage,” I remind the team, ignoring the chorus of mildly annoyed “We knows” that follow. “Let’s give them a show.”

The car continues to trail behind us as we approach the safehouse. It stops at a safe distance when we pull up to the cabin, its headlights switching off. It’s all going to plan - just the way we want it. The spy is none the wiser, believing they’ve got one up on us.

They couldn’t be more wrong.

We’ve got the Serpents exactly where we want them. Now, it’s just a matter of time before we spring the trap.

Ten more Reapers joined us as soon as our tail was out of sight. Brick and I are outside the cabin, watching over Sadie—seemingly alone. I can barely stand the thought of her being the bait, but at least this way, I can keep her close and ensure her safety. She’s sitting in the living room, pretending to watch TV, trying to appear as normal and unsuspecting as possible.

Outside, the rest of the MC is hidden, waiting for the Iron Serpents to show up. We have eyes on the surrounding area, and we’re all connected via earpieces, ready to act at a moment’s notice.

Every second feels like an eternity as we wait, the tension around the cabin palpable. I keep my eyes trained on the window, my hand resting on my gun, ready to protect Sadie at any cost.

Now all we can do is wait and hope that Viper and his gang take the bait. And when they do, I’ll make sure they pay for everything they’ve done.

Time seems to crawl by as we wait for any sign of the Iron Serpents. The MC members remain hidden and alert, ready to spring into action at a moment’s notice. Sadie, still playing her part, sits in the living room, appearing vulnerable and exposed. I can see the fear behind her eyes, but she’s holding it together remarkably well.

When I hear the distant roar of bikes, I signal to the rest of the Cascade Reapers through our earpieces. “They’re here. Stay hidden and wait for my command.”

Viper and a handful of his men dismount from their bikes, their eyes fixed on the cabin. They exchange a few words, their voices too low to make out, and then cautiously approach the front door. They have no idea what they’re walking into.

My grip on my gun tightens, and I glance over at Sadie. She’s sitting rigidly, her knuckles white as she grips the armrest of the chair. I give her a reassuring nod, and she manages to flash me a weak smile in return.

With a deep breath, I prepare myself for the impending confrontation. The next few minutes will determine the fate of our club and the woman I’m finding it harder and harder not to admit I’m in love with.

Just as I’m about to give the signal for our men to be ready to emerge from their hiding spots, the world erupts into chaos. There’s a blinding flash followed by a deafening explosion. The ground beneath me shakes violently, and I’m momentarily thrown off balance.

“What the fuck was that?” I yell, trying to see through the cloud of dust and debris that’s erupted into the air.

In the ensuing chaos, I lose sight of Sadie. When my vision clears, there she is—a hundred yards away from me now, being dragged by one arm. The Serpent has a gun to her head.

“No!” I roar, lunging forward, but it’s too late. He’s already dragging her onto a waiting motorcycle. He motions with the gun for her to climb on, and when she tries to pull away, he cocks it, and she relents.

I rush toward them, but I’m not fast enough. The bike roars to life, and they’re off, racing toward the highway.

“Sadie’s been taken,” I shout into the mic, my voice filled with desperation and rage. I’m already running for the loaner bike the brothers brought for me after I mangled mine. “I’m going after them.”

I have to get her back. I kick-start the engine and tear off after them, the roar of my motorcycle echoing in the night.

Behind me, the rest of the Reapers are scrambling, trying to regroup and make sense of what just happened. But they’re too far away, too tied up with the chaos caused by the explosion. I’m on my own in this pursuit, racing against time to save Sadie.

The Serpent is fast, but I’ve got the advantage of knowing these woods like the back of my hand. Trees blur past me as I gun the engine, my focus locked onto the taillight in the distance.

Behind me, my brothers’ bikes are a distant rumble. The plan has gone to hell, but all that matters now is getting Sadie back. My heart pounds in my chest like a war drum, each beat echoing the same thought:I can’t lose her.

Through the earpiece, I hear the shouts and confusion from the rest of the MC, but it’s all white noise. The only thing that registers is Brick’s voice, steady and clear, despite the chaos. “Stay on them, Slash. We’re right behind you.”

I push my bike to its limit, the powerful engine responding eagerly as I navigate the winding path. The Serpent is trying to lose me, taking sharp turns and zigzagging through the forest’s rough roads, but I stay on his tail.

The cabin and the explosion are soon far behind us, but the danger is far from over. I know that as soon as we hit the highway, the stakes will rise. But right now, in the heart of the chase, there’s no room for fear. There’s only the hunt, the road, and desperate hope.

I pull up closer, my bike roaring beneath me, and for a moment our eyes meet in the rearview mirror—Sadie’s wide with fear, and the Serpent’s cold and calculated. My instinct is to drive straight into the Serpent’s bike, knock him off the road, and grab Sadie. But she’s on the back of that bike, no helmet, her hair flying wild in the wind. It would kill her just as likely as save her.
