“You’re safe with me.”

Her nod grips my chest in a way I haven’t felt since my family died. I don’t know what it is about this woman that makes me want to protect her, even to the point of going against Vulcan.

She has reason to be worried. Vulcan is a coldhearted bastard.

I’ll take your business. He’ll take your life.

I don’t know what’s gotten into Jeff but to clear his debt with Nicoli only to take out another loan with Vulcan is a suicide mission. And I won’t let him drag Aurora into his bullshit. But Vulcan won't stop until he gets what he wants, and I'm sure I’ve just made a new enemy.

I roll the BMW to a stop. My crew makes a quick change of vehicles. I lead Aurora to my waiting car and hand the keys to one of my soldiers.

“Destroy it.”

“Yes, sir.” He gets into the car and speeds off in the opposite direction.

I hold the door open for Aurora, and help her inside. She stares straight ahead as I slide into the driver's seat.

“Thank you.” Her voice is low, fearful.

"You're welcome," I smile at her.

Aurora nods and turns to face me, and our eyes meet. I see raw fear in her eyes. She looks so vulnerable that I want to pull her into my arms and assure her everything will be fine. But I don't. She doesn't appear ready for any physical touch yet. And I totally respect that.

I give the area a quick sweep for any cars following us and see none. And slowly pull out into the flow of traffic, taking the long way to my house.

"Where are we going?"

"My house."

A concerned look flickers over her face, but it disappears. "I'm really grateful you saved my ass. I'm still trying to process everything that happened."

"Don't worry, everything will be fine. But I’m sure Vulcan and his men may want to come after you. You’ll need to hide out at my place until we figure out what they want."

“But I don’t do anything.”

“You’re bait to get to Jeff.”

The rest of the journey is silent. A sense of peace settles over me, but the feeling doesn't take root fully because I know Vulcan won’t stop until he gets what he wants, and I need to figure out what the fuck is wrong with Jeff. But for now, Aurora is safe from Vulcan's hands.

I grip the wheel tighter and zoom down the street. Home is getting closer. I'm happy to see the roofing of the home in the distance. A relieved sigh escapes my lips as I pull up to the gate and press the button. I spend most of my time in the city. This is where I come when I need a break from it all.

My yacht and my home are my sanctuaries, and I want to share them both with her.

The gate slides open, and I sweep the area once more before pulling forward. I wait for it to close, and we creep up the driveway to my home. The surrounding trees hide the house tucked back a few miles from my private road.

I park near the front door, and we get out at the same time. Her mouth falls open as she looks around the compound.

"Wow..."

Her eyes move swiftly, taking in my property with the tall trees and rolling hills that stretch into the horizon. I see with a new perspective with the various shades of green and brown and how the sunlight filters through the canopy of treetops.

She looks impressed. I look over my shoulder to be sure no one is sneaking up on us out of habit. Then I open my phone and increase the level of sensitivity of the motion detectors. I edge closer to Aurora and grab her hand.

“Let’s go.”

Aurora nods, not pulling away from me.

We walk together to the front door through the wide passageway. With Aurora's hands in mine, I feel the shakiness of her hand and her entire body.
