“Let’s go. I need shampoo.”

“Shampoo?” he asks quizzically. “Of all the things, Emily. Shampoo?”

I nod, grinning widely. “Yes, Felix, shampoo. My hair needs some care, you know?”

He rolls his eyes, but a smile tugs at the corners of his lips. “Okay, let’s go find some fancy shampoo.”

As we walk towards the cosmetics store, I can feel his eyes on me, burning into my skin.

I turn to look at him, but he looks away, pretending to scan the stores.

“What’s wrong?” I ask him softly.

“Nothing,” he says, his tone clipped. “Just thinking.”

“About?” I prompt.

“About how good you looked in that lingerie,” he says, his voice low.

“I couldn’t take my eyes off you.”

My heart starts racing, and I feel a pulsing heat between my thighs. I take a deep breath, trying to calm myself.

“Felix,” I say sternly. “You can’t say things like that in public.”

“Fine,” he says. “Why don’t you also go wild and get some conditioner?”

I smile, feeling relieved that he’s changed the subject. We browse through the store, picking out various hair products.

We reach the women’s health section, and my eyes fall upon the tampons.

Then the realization hits me like a ton of bricks.

The last time I bought tampons was when I had just moved into Felix’s house.

I used them once, and then ... it’s been more than two months.

Fuck. Fuck. Fuck.

I feel my cheeks flush red hot and my heart racing.

How could I have forgotten something so important?

I glance at Felix, but he’s busy scanning the shelves of hair products.

I start panicking, wondering how to get out of there without anyone noticing.

“Emily, what do you think of this one?” Felix’s voice pulls me out of my thoughts. I turn to him and nod absently, my mind still racing.

“I have to go to the bathroom,” I blurt out suddenly before I can even think about it.

Felix looks surprised. “Sure, it’s just over there,” he says, pointing towards the back of the store.

I walk quickly towards the bathroom and then look back to see that Felix is still engrossed in checking out different things.

I take a sharp right towards the pharmacy section, pick up five pregnancy tests, and run to the first empty counter.

I place the wad of cash on the table and beg the registrar to hurry up with the checkout.
