One of the men stops before me, his square jaw pulsing with anger despite his neutral face.

His eyes slowly move over me, measuring every inch of my trembling body. I’m trying to form words, but nothing comes out as I sit paralyzed with fear, not knowing what he wants from me.

Who are they? Who sent them? Is it one of Sal Lucchese’s guys? My fathers? Or my crazy ex-fiancé's?

Fuck. The thought that three groups of people may be looking to hunt me down just makes me realize how precarious my situation is.

I wonder. Should I tell them I’m pregnant? Should I beg for mercy?

But the past has taught me that the mafioso knows no mercy regarding kidnapping- especially a woman carrying a child that could belong to one of their own enemies.

And all three men searching for me hate the father of my child.

I can’t tell them.

I look around myself. It’s deserted. I don’t know if I have an out.

Just then, one of the men moves closer. I can practically feel his breath on my neck as he speaks.

“We have orders to bring you back to the house. He’s been trying to find you,” he says gruffly.

“We don’t have much time, so I advise you to come along peacefully.”

The way he talks, I can’t tell who has sent for me. The man quickly puts his hand on my neck and lifts me up.

My brain is screaming, telling me to fight, but my body feels frozen. I take a deep breath and gather all the courage I can find.

“Okay,” I whisper, nodding as if in defeat.

They point towards one of the pickups and nod at me to climb in. I do, without hesitation or fear of consequence.

As we near the truck, they make me sit at the back with a gun pointed at my head.

“No funny business,” one of them warns gruffly before slamming the door shut and pushing the gun further against my head so that it hurt and scared me in equal measure.

My heart is pounding inside my chest like an angry beast locked away in a cage for far too long as I sit there helplessly waiting for what will come next- whether it be hope or death, which awaits us on the other side of this

journey that has been thrust upon us.

I start to make plans, searching for escape routes in case I get the chance- but my thoughts are interrupted by a sudden jolt as we turn into a well-lit street corner buzzing with late-night activity.

The man puts the gun down from my head to conceal it at my waist and says,

“If you try anything, just know you won’t even see what hit you.”

My heart stops for a moment as everything around me stills.

But in this frozen moment of terror comes an idea that may just save me from all of this.

With lightning speed, I burst into action like some kind of ninja warrior; I used my elbow to disarm him, punch him in the face, grab the door handle with one hand while turning the other quickly, and unlock it with no more

than a second left to spare.

I swing open the door, pushing it wide with every ounce of strength left within me before rolling out onto the street.

People start to gather and run toward us as soon as they realize what’s happening.

The man snarls some curses at me and tries to grab me by the ankle, but I react quickly and kick him hard in the face.
