A few moments later, Emily descends the stairs in jeans and a white t-shirt, her hair tumbling casually over her shoulders.

Emily’s eyes widen when she sees the small army assembled in our living room.

“What’s going on?”

I pull her close, wrapping an arm around her waist.

“This is the security team I’ve assigned to keep you safe. These men will guard you day and night to ensure nothing happens to you.”

“All of them?” Emily glances at the soldiers, her cheeks flushing. She’s not used to being surveyed. I can understand.

“You can never be too careful, tesoro,” I say, my fingers tightening on her hip.

"At least this way, no one will hurt you. I swear it.”

She looks them over and comes closer to my ear. She whispers. "Can we talk? In private?"

"Stay here," I tell them before leading her out of the room. Once we're out of earshot, I give her a nod to begin.

Emily shakes her head, panic flickering in her eyes.

“This is too much, Felix. I can’t have all these men watching me all the time.”

I cup her face in my hands, forcing her to meet my gaze.

“Listen to me. Your safety is not up for negotiation. If people want to hurt you, I will do whatever it takes to protect you. These men will be stationed around the house 24/7. You are not to leave the house. If you need anything,

you ask them. You can not use your cell phone. All communication with the outside world will be done through the landline. God forbid you to disclose our measures by error; there's a tap on the cell. At least with landlines, we

can monitor breaches.”

“But—”

“No buts,” I interrupt. “You’re staying here where I can ensure your security personally if needed. All your needs will be provided for."

"But what if I need to see a doctor?" she asks fussily.

I frown, getting worried. "Do you need to see a doctor? If you want to see a doctor, I’ll bring one.”

Emily frowns. “What if it’s a woman problem? I can’t have a male doctor examine me.”

“Then I’ll hire a female doctor,” I say impatiently. “Is that what’s worrying you? I can provide anything you need, tesoro. You just have to trust me.”

She searches my face, no doubt looking for any sign of weakness. When she finds none, her shoulders slump in defeat.

“I don’t like this,” she mutters.

“You don’t have to like it.” I kiss her forehead. “You just have to accept it.”

I take her hand and lead her back to the living room.

My men shift on their feet, the tension in the room thickening.

I turn away from Emily to face them.

“This is Emily, the woman I told you about. Some of you may know her, some of you may not. It doesn't matter.” I say.

“You will guard her with your life. If any harm comes to her, it will be the last thing you do on this earth. Have I made myself clear?”
