“Yes, Don Carlisi,” they reply in unison.
“Good.” I nod. “Now get to work.”
The men exit the room until only Emily and I remain.
She sags against me, her hands fisting in my shirt. I rub her back, waiting for her breathing to calm down.
“It’s going to be alright, tesoro,” I murmur. “No one will hurt you. I promise.”
She doesn’t reply, but I feel her nod against my chest. It’s a start.
Little by little, I will gain her trust because I know what I am doing.
Once I'm sure the team is up and stationed at their positions, I head into work, my mind distracted with thoughts of Emily cooped up in the house all day under guard.
Though I know it's for her safety, I can imagine how stifling it must feel.
Throughout the day, I call the head of my security detail for updates. The answer is the same each time: Emily has been sleeping for most of the day.
Worry gnaws at my insides. Is she feeling anxious or depressed?
She had asked very specifically for a doctor.
Is she sick and not telling me something I should know?
I know this situation isn't ideal, but I hoped she would adjust better.
When evening falls, I decide to head home early.
On my way back, I stop by her favorite Italian restaurant and ordered enough pasta, seafood, and desserts to feed an army.
After delivering the food, I go up to Emily's room.
She's curled up in an armchair by the window, staring listlessly outside.
I knock gently on the doorframe. "Dinner is ready, tesoro."
She turns to look at me, her eyes dull. "I'm not hungry."
"I insist." I cross the room and lift her into my arms.
She rests her head on my shoulder, too worn down to argue.
"You need to eat."
I guide her downstairs to the dining room and settle her into a chair.
Then I fill her plate with her favorites, hoping the aroma and taste will tempt her appetite.
"Please eat, Emily," I say softly, sitting across from her. "For me."
She picks up her fork and takes a small bite of pasta.
I release a breath, tension easing from my shoulders.
This is a start. Little by little, I will gain back the vibrant, spirited woman I fell for.
She just needs time.
