"Excellent. We'll ensure you're in perfect condition for our big day." His eyes narrow as he scrutinizes me, and I feel my stomach twist with dread.
"I'm arranging for a doctor to visit you tomorrow for a pre-wedding examination."
"Okay," I mutter quietly, trying to mask my nervousness.
Hunter leaves the room, slamming the door behind him.
I sink to the floor, my heart racing and my body aching.
I protectively wrap my arms around my stomach, praying that my fear doesn't betray me when the doctor arrives.
The next day, as the doctor enters the medical room set up for me in Drucci's basement, I can't help but feel the weight of my secret bearing down on me.
My hands shake as I hear Hunter's footsteps outside the hallway.
"Good afternoon, Rosalie," the doctor says gently, his smile starkly contrasting Hunter's cold demeanor.
"Don't worry; this will be a quick and easy examination."
"Thank you," I reply, trying to sound calm.
But my voice trembles, and I know he must sense my apprehension.
Please, let him not find out about the baby.
As the doctor begins the examination, I focus on my breathing, trying to steady my nerves.
Hunter cannot know.
He can never know.
The safety of my child depends on it.
The doctor's eyes widen as he reads the ultrasound on the machine, and my heart stutters.
My secret, the tiny life growing inside me, is about to be exposed.
I glance at the door, dreading the moment Hunter will return.
"Rosalie," the doctor says softly, "you're pregnant."
"Please," I whisper, tears pooling in my eyes. "You can't tell him."
"Miss Battaglia, I'm obligated to inform Mr. Drucci." His expression turns apologetic, but I know he can do nothing.
"Please. I have a family."
"Please," I beg again, desperation clawing at my throat.
"He'll hurt the baby."
"Rosalie, I..."
The door bursts open, interrupting the doctor's words.
