him to our spot in the forest for some ‘sprucing up’ which is our code word for beat the living crap out of him, I lost it.

I got in my car and circumvented their violent plans.

I found them, and before I could think twice, I broke through the bushes and stormed into the clearing.

“What is going on here?” I shouted in a rage. “What do you people think you’re doing?”

The poor man’s face had contorted with surprise when he saw me, and he couldn’t have been more grateful to have found an escape.

To prove how serious I was about change, I gave the man a year to repay the loan and shorted the interest rate to 9% - a rarity in our world.

“I’ll deal with you all later,” I told my associates, glowering at them.

“You’ve gotten overconfident. From now on, you won’t dare breathe without taking my permission. Understood?”

They had nodded like little school children caught in a naughty act. I felt like beating the living daylights out of them, but I refrained.

I want to change, remember?

I decided to walk down the winding path in the forest, for it was a beautiful night, and when do I get a chance to enjoy nature on such a cool, calm, quiet night?

No. Such moments are rare for a Don, and I want to make the best of them.

So this is how life can be, I think to myself, smiling as I hear an owl hooting.

I’m surrounded by the delicate fragrance of soft jasmine, roses and ...lavender. Emily comes to mind.

God damn it. I’ve been thinking about her for so long; it’s eating me alive. If I could go back in time, I might have handled things differently.

Now that I know what I know, she changed her mind and did what she did to save a life - someone’s. That infuses some form of feeling in the coldest corners of my heart.

I continue walking when I think I hear something. A form of struggle. Footsteps. An animal?

I can feel something strange in the air. I do not recognize it, but something inside me warns me to be careful.

I take a few more steps and find myself standing at the edge of a clearing, looking down at an unknown man.

Someone else stands prominently in front of them, with a gun resting on her temple, and I take a deep breath.

Emily? What the hell?

My stomach sinks as I realize that she’s being threatened. The man has his gun drawn and looks ready to pull the trigger.

My heart races like a wild animal, ready to attack anything across its path.

Time seems to stand still as I glare at him without flinching— my eyes filled with anger yet caution.

I slowly draw out my own gun and point it at his head.

One wrong move, and he will be dead in seconds. But even then, killing him must happen - especially if Emily’s life is at risk due to me.

Should I shoot? Should I wait?

I try to listen, but they’re too far down. I can’t hear a word of exchange.

I keep my eyes on his gun, waiting to see where the trigger is.

His gun is still locked, poised against Emily’s temple.
