“And that’s how you ended up here,” I concur.

“That’s how I ended up here,” she repeats, nodding.

“Thank you for telling me the truth,” I say, gently squeezing her hand.

She looks perturbed. I wonder why, but I don’t ask.

Sometimes, the past is haunting and brings back memories no one wants to speak of. I get it.

“If you’ve survived all that,” I say, “you can survive the mafia. Why are you still scared?”

“I... I don’t know,” she sighs.

“I’m not scared right now. But I’ve fought hard to find peace in my life, Felix. I don’t want to end up in the very situation I’ve tried to run from my whole life.”

“What,” I smile, “you think you’d be doing? Shooting up people with guns? You’d be working on the backend financial securities, Emily,” I laugh.

“I won’t exactly depend on you for your warfare skills!”

This, for some reason, makes her laugh.

“So, an office, huh?” she asks.

“An office.”

“I can’t believe the mafia has offices now,” she laughs. “It’s almost...”

“Legitimate?” I ask.

She nods.

“I want to make it legitimate. I’m sure you understand, Emily. We still do illegal things. It’s just that we’re smarter about it now. We’ve got to balance out our affairs.”

She looks at me, her eyes full of questions.

“We’ll talk about it after you decide,” I finally say.

“Okay, so I come to the office and leave? like a nine-to-five?"

“Something like that. Hours could vary.”

“We can’t continue doing this, then,” she adds.

“We can’t mix the heat of emotions and my professional obligations.”

“What?” I ask, pretending to be shocked. “No little quickies in the storage room?” I smirk.

She laughs and shakes her head. “No,” she answers. “No more of that.”

This is what I was afraid of.

I don’t know if I can keep my hands off her. If she wasn’t obstinate, I’d just give her money until she figures out her shit, but I know she won’t take it.

Right now, I fear that if not for this job, she’d end up dead somewhere... or worse.

That leaves me with no choice but to have her in my line of sight.

It will be hard to keep my distance.
