“Alright,” I say, resigned.
“I guess I’ll just have to take out my pent-up aggression at the gym, then.”
“Exactly,” she nods, her eyes twinkling with amusement.
I can feel my heart swell. I keep forgetting how beautiful she is.
“I guess that’s a yes, then,” I say.
“Yes,” she smiles.
“Welcome to the mafia, Emily.”
“Thanks,” she says, her smile growing wider. “Let’s make it a date. When do I start?”
“Tomorrow too soon?” I ask her.
She shakes her head and gets up. I stare at her curiously. “Where are you going?”
“I have to quit my job at White Rabbit and find a place to stay,” she says.
“Right now, I’m homeless, remember?”
She looks scared yet determined.
“You don’t have to do that,” I say, reaching for her hand.
“You can stay here with me. It’ll be safer here with your ex still on the hunt.”
She shakes her head and takes a step back.
“I can’t do that, Felix.” Her voice is firm. “It’s not right.”
“Then give me his name and address and let me take care of it,” I say angrily.
“Why won’t you let me take care of it?”
“Because it’s not your problem,” she says.
“I can take care of myself. I just need to find somewhere to stay quickly.”
“Look, you can’t have it your way with everything,” I insist.
“The least I could do is offer you a safe place until things are sorted out. In case you don’t realize, what happens to you now affects the entire Carlisi operation. My business suffers if you’re living alone somewhere unsafe, and
he finds you and hurts you. You get that, right? You’re one of my people now. I’d do this for anyone who’s a part of my family.”
I want to say I’m a liar, I won’t do this for anyone, and that people can be replaced, but I can’t bear to know she’s hurt.
I can’t bear to replace her.
But I don’t, for I’m beginning to understand what logic would apply to Emily and what won’t.
She nodded and held my gaze for a long moment before finally asking what was plaguing her.
