The air in the car turns silent, heavy with unsaid words.

I can feel her eyes on me, but I don’t dare look at her.

But then, she reaches out and touches my hand. The simple gesture sends electric shocks through my body.

“I’m sorry,” she whispers. “I didn’t mean to complicate things or put myself in danger. But I can’t stand by and watch our enemies hurt us. I want to help, Felix.”

I finally glanced over at her, seeing the earnestness in her eyes.

Despite the danger we just faced because of her carelessness, I feel a surge of affection for her.

“I know,” I say, my voice low and husky.

“But you have to be careful. You’re not trained. Look, in the backend, you were the boss, not because I patronized you, but because you’re excellent. Out there, I’m the Don. There are times I must listen to you, and times you

must listen to me. Please, Emily.”

“I understand,” she says softly, her voice full of understanding.

“But I can handle myself, Felix. I want to be part of this world with you. I want to be by your side, not just sitting back, being left in the dark.”

I look at her, my heart filled with love and admiration. “I know,” I say, my voice low. “And I respect that. But you have to let me protect you sometimes.”

“But I don’t need protection.”

“I saw that,” I say, and we both laugh. “Where did you learn those moves?”

Her mood changes. I sense it, even though she won’t admit it. “I took karate in school.”

“Your moves are beyond karate at school. Tell me, Emily, where did you learn your stunts?”

I mean, the woman has, by now, punched out two guys right in front of me. That’s no small feat, given her size and theirs.

“Self-defense classes,” she mutters.

“How bad did he hurt you?” I ask, gripping my wheel tight.

Only a desperate woman would be desperate enough to dedicate that much practice to an art we shouldn’t need in today’s world.

“Just tell me where he lives, Emily. You’d never have to worry again.”

“Just drop it, Felix, please,” she snaps in a tone I haven’t heard before.

She notices how harsh it sounds, for she follows up with a simple, “I’m tired.”

And that’s all I need to know.

As we approach our destination, I take a deep breath and exhale slowly.

I park in a concealed location behind a tree on the off-beaten path and help Emily out.

“No matter what, stay close to me,” I demand.

She nods, her eyes wide and alert as we make our way through the thicket of trees toward an old abandoned cabin. I hold her hand and guide her gently.

When we approach, I see two of my enforcers standing guard outside the entrance.

Emily and I enter to find Enzo tied securely to a chair inside.
