“Well, we were wrong,” Angelo says, his voice shaky.

“We just added up the balances and compared statements from before the hack and now.”

I could feel my blood boiling inside me, and all I could think was, how could this happen?

How could such a thing be possible?

“What’s the damage?” I ask.

“Fifty million.”

“How?” I ask. “How did they remove fifty million from our wallets?”

My grip tightens around the armrest of my chair as I try to keep the anger and frustration at bay. But it’s hard. Fifty million is not a tiny amount, even for us.

“Get all the teams on this,” I say, my voice low and dangerous.

“I want to know where they transferred those funds and bring back that money.”

“Boss, only one person can help,” says Angelo.

“Who?” I ask.

“Emily.”

“No,” I tell Angelo ferociously. “Emily stays out of this. We’ve troubled her enough. After yesterday, she needs some time.”

“Boss, we truly don’t know. The wallets are built on decentralized systems. We can’t identify specific individuals behind the transactions, and to make it worse, the hackers combined multiple transactions to obscure the origin

and destination of funds. Technically, we can’t trace which account the money was transferred to.”

“Well,” I say, leaning back and placing my chin on my hands.

“We do know it was the Luccheses, right? So we need to take back what’s rightfully ours. Gather the team, and we’ll hit them on the black market. They might have stolen this money from our wallets, but one way or another,

we’ll get it back.”

“Boss, please, call Emily.”

“Get out, Angelo,” I say. “Emily’s done enough. She stays out of this now.”

“But boss, she may know how to crack a trace.”

“I said that’s enough, Angelo. She did her part. Now it’s up to us what we do. Her job is to prevent hacks, not bring back lost funds. Am I clear?”

“Yes, boss,” says Angelo. I turn back to my screen, and Angelo turns around to walk out. I hear him gasp.

“Oh...” he says.

I look up.

Emily is standing right there, and she is not looking happy.

“Why are you hiding things from me?” she asks. “As a hacker, I can help you bring back the stolen money.”

“Emily,” I say, standing.

“No,” she says, furious. “Stop treating me like I can shatter anytime.”
