“Forever. When a network operates a theft ring, there’s no hunting down the final wallet. For all we know, the money could be transferred wallet-to-wallet every few seconds, and they could have millions set up. I’m sorry for

keeping you up all night. I failed.”

Felix stands up and puts a hand on my shoulder.

“Don’t say that. You did your best, and we still have leads. We’ll find them and make them pay.”

I look at him, still unsure of what to say. I don’t deserve his kindness when I’ve been hiding such a big secret from him.

But before I can dwell on that thought any longer, Felix steps closer to me, his hand still on my shoulder.

His eyes lock onto mine, and the air between us is thick with tension.

“I need you to know something,” he says, his voice low and urgent.

“I trust you. More than anyone else in this room. Emily, I’m sorry for keeping our current emergency from you earlier. You know I don’t mean it.”

“I know,” I say, trying to keep my voice steady.

“But it doesn’t change the fact that I feel like an outsider sometimes. Like I’m not really part of the team.”

“You are part of the team,” he says, his voice low and intense.

“You’re more than that. You have a place here with me.”

“Uh-huh,” I nod. “So what are we going to do now?”

“Fratelli e sorelle,” says Felix, clapping his hands and calling for attention.

Everyone turns to look at their Don.

“Brothers and sisters, don’t be disheartened. They may have won the battle, but we will win the war.”

As Felix speaks, his hand slides down my arm and laces with my fingers.

I feel a jolt of electricity shoots through me at his touch.

I look up at him, and our eyes lock onto each other’s. At that moment, everything else fades into the background.

He lifts my hand into the air like I’m some prized champion.

“Whatever we do know so far has been because of Emily. What we do from now on will be from the good old playbook of days gone by. We need to hit them where it hurts. Where the Lucchese keep their money. What do we

know so far?”

“Boss, they’re in a new business now. Selling arms. Their shipments go across American land, except California. I say we steal their goods, sell them.”

“They’ll catch us before we can make back the 50 million,” I say.

“You see, a truck might have weapons worth a few million. We steal a few trucks, and they’d change their operations. We’d never have an in because they’ll know we’re coming for them.”

“So what do we do?” asks Angelo.

“We hit them where they don’t see us coming,” I say. “Something so out of the blue that it leaves not even a paper trail, let alone an actual one.”

Felix looks at me, intrigued. “However so?” he asks.

“Back in the day, the mafia functioned underground, right? Everything was in gold, cash, diamonds, guns, even people. But then, what happened?”
