“They needed real fronts,” says Angelo.

“Correct,” I say, walking over to the whiteboard.

“We started legitimizing out there. We needed a front of sorts. From restaurants, bars, and construction companies to providing protection, the mafia families started running actual, acceptable businesses. So what happens?

Customers walk into a bar, and pay cash. The mafia makes a thousand bucks in cash and tells the banks they made ten. They deposit the ten, right? Nine of which is not actually from customers, but from drug sales, or blood

money, or whatever their poison.”

“Thanks for that history lesson, Emily,” says Felix, giving me a little smile.

“We know how this works.”

“Yeah, right, sorry,” I say, clearing my throat. I remind myself to not sound too knowledgeable. From now, I should know just enough to make a point.

“Well, what do they do with this money in the banks?” I ask.

“We grow it safely,” says Felix.

“How?” I ask again.

“We build developments and sell properties. We buy bonds. We buy stocks.”

“And that, my dear friends, is where we hit them,” I say, drawing everyone’s attention back to the whiteboard.

“We need to infiltrate their financial investments. We must find a way to take their money without them realizing it. It’s time for us to destabilize them. To create chaos and let them injure their very own backbones.”

Felix nods. “I like it,” he says.

“But we need to do it right. We can’t just jump into this without a plan.”

“Of course not,” I say. “But we have the element of surprise. They won’t see this coming.”

Felix looks at me thoughtfully.

“Do you have any ideas on how we can do that?” he asks.

I nod, feeling a strange sense of excitement coursing through my veins.

“I think I do,” I say, my voice low and confident.

“But it’s not going to be easy.”

“Nothing good ever is,” Felix says, squeezing my hand gently.

Chapter 23

FELIX

Emilyhasaskedforan hour to think, and we’re supposed to reconvene in the room then. I, however, don’t leave her side.

“Aldo,” I say to one of the young guns, which I am yet to initiate.

If he continues doing a job this well, I anticipate he’ll be in sooner than he knows it.

“Go over to that café around the corner and pick up a cream cheese and ham bagel with a fruit salad on the side for Emily. For the rest of us, just get whatever you find to eat that seems good. Bring back a dozen coffees,

black, with sugar and creamers. Everyone is tired.”
