“You’re acting impertinent,” he says at last.

“This is in no way a means of control. If this was anyone else, I’d say the same thing. None of my people are going down on a mission this dangerous. Whether they’ve worked for me for three years, three months, or three

days. Whether they work for me or whether I’ve fallen for them. No one will do what you suggest unless they’re a paid professional. I will hire the right person, who is well-versed in the risks, and we will no longer be speaking

about this.”

I look at Felix, my anger still simmering inside me.

I don’t think he understands where I come from.

I can survive anything. I have survived everything.

The only way to prove it is to show him.

For that, I have to win this battle and lose the war.

We’re playing a dangerous game, and we can’t afford to make any mistakes.

So, I play along.

“Fine,” I say, throwing my hands up.

“Hire someone else. But make sure they know what they’re doing.”

“I will,” he says, his voice softening. “I promise.”

A pause hangs heavily in the air between us, and then Felix moves even closer to me.

I’m conscious of the warmth radiating from his body, and I can feel the tension growing stronger between us.

But I’m still mad at him and don’t have time to lose. The party is tonight. So I step back before things heat up and play a little distraction game.

“So, will you be hiring someone for tonight?” I ask.

“Too short notice for today,” he says.

“But we will be on point by the next party.”

Perfect, I think to myself. So my plan will work.

“You going in to work today?” he asks.

“I have a headache,” I lie.

Felix reaches out to touch my forehead, feeling for a fever.

“You sure? You don’t look well.”

“I’ll be fine,” I say, stepping away from his touch.

“I just need some rest.”

“Okay,” he says, his hand reaching out to touch my arm before he turns to leave.

“If you need anything, let me know through my cell phone. I will be meeting a few people for a round of golf today, so I won’t be in the office today, either. I’ll leave you to it then.”

I watch him leave, feeling a mix of frustration and desire.
