If I have to barge in there, guns blazing, all alone, to get her out, I will.
But then, I see a woman engrossed in a scuffle.
I keep my eyes preyed to catch a glimpse of her face, for I know Emily is in disguise, and my heart falls to my stomach.
I quickly jump out of the car, slamming shut the driver’s side. I run up to the source of the noise and see Emily, all but in the hands of some mafioso.
Everything inside me surges with anger. No one touches Emily.
I run towards the car and punch the mafioso, sending him flying against the wall.
Emily gasps with surprise.
“Touch her one more time, and I’ll have you killed,” I hiss, my voice dripping with venom.
“That too, if I feel generous. If you misbehave, I’ll have to kill you myself.
The man snarls and spits on the ground toward Emily’s feet. I punch again, harder this time, almost knocking him out.
I finally release Emily, my face expressionless.
“Get in the car,” I command.
She nods, her eyes wide with shock.
I walk her towards the car and get her in the passenger seat.
She’s trembling, but she’s not as scared as I am. I’m terrified.
I get in the driver’s seat and start the engine.
I drive in silence, my mind racing.
I ask her to follow me to my room when we get home. I can’t trust myself to say anything yet. I’m still too livid.
We enter my bedroom, and I lock the door behind us. I turn around, and her gaze sends shockwaves through me.
Despite the anger, my heart pulls in her direction.
“What were you thinking?” I snarl.
“I had a job to do,” she says.
I shake my head in disbelief. “No, it was reckless. You could have gotten yourself hurt or worse, Emily.”
She sighs and looks away. “I’m sorry,”
“First, tell me what happened.”
Emily explains everything, from the mission to the moment I showed up.
I still don’t agree with what she did, but I can understand why she did it.
When she’s done, I sit down on the bed.
“I’m glad I got there in time,” I say, trying to keep my anger in check.
She turns to me. “I’m sorry,” she repeats, her voice shaking.
