“Well…” Her cheeks flame. “Lots of times. But it was one night. Now it’s done, he’s moved on, and so have I. By the way, I was coming in here to let you know you have a visitor.”

“I do?” I shove up from my bed and search my room, like that person is hidden in a corner. “We’ve been in here for ages, gossiping about sex, and someone’s out there waiting for me?”

She moves to my door and steps into the hall a beat ahead of me. “Yes. But I assure you, he can wait.”

“He?”

We emerge into my kitchen to find Axel sitting on the counter, a can of soda in one hand, and a goofy grin notching up when our eyes meet.

“Axel?”

“Hey.” He drops his feet to the floor so his boots hit with a thud. “If I had my time again, I’d move in with a bunch of chicks, just so I could hear them gossip about sex.” He grabs my hand and pulls me in until our chests clash and my breath escapes to bathe his chin. “I was wondering if you’d like to go out tonight. On a date.”

“A d…” Dazed, I search the kitchen for a hidden camera. Surely this is a joke. “What?”

“Dinner.” He sets a gentle kiss on my jaw. “Candles. A little nookie when no one is looking.”

“Am I only a vagina to you?” I push up straight and scowl, though I’m teasing. Sort of. “I have emotional needs, too. I have a brain that requires stimulation just as often, if not more, than my clit.”

“I’ll just…” Viv kinda spins in a circle. “I’ll just go.”

“We could eat dinner,” Axel murmurs. “So your nutritional needs are met. Then I could eatyou, while you do a crossword puzzle and I spell out the answers with my tongue.” He dives in and bites my bottom lip. “That’s intellectual and sexual needs taken care of.”

“And emotional?” I challenge. “What of my heart?”

“What if I reminded you I’m in love with you?” He buries his lips against my neck and nibbles. Laves. “And that I’m determined to be a better man. That I’m turning over a new leaf that includes honesty in everything I do, including, and especially, my fears about work, family, and life?”

Sold. Sold. Toss me in the tallest tower and lock me up. I wanna stay with the Beast.

“I mean…” I swallow down my nerves and give him none of the instant gratification he searches for. “Those are good points to hit. I suppose.”

“Yousuppose.” He bites my flesh and slides his tongue across to soothe when I hiss. “I have a surprise for you.” Pulling back, he meets my eyes. “If you’re interested.”

“What kind of surprise?” Viv asks eagerly. Bold, brave, she dashes back into the room and sits on the counter just inches from Axel’s shoulder. Crossing her legs and setting her hands on her knees, she smiles. “I need a little romance in my life too. Soooo…”

“Maybe you should call your fuck buddy and see what he’s doing tonight,” Axel counters. Then bringing his eyes across to mine, his perfect silver stare seduces me. Reveres me.

He’saskingto give me all the things I was begging for seven months ago. And though a smarter woman might be a little less enthusiastic, I know, as I’ve always known, I could never tell him no.

“Let me surprise you, Sully. I have it all planned out, so you’ve just gotta get in my truck and come with me.”

“I was gonna watch trash TV and wear my fat girl pants.”Yeah, Han. Act like you’re not already mentally selecting your date outfit.“I had plans.”

His lips curl into a seductive smirk. “Then wear the fat girl pants.” He drops a kiss on my lips. “Invite me in for the trash TV. That works too. Whatever you want, babe. This is your show.”

“Don’t twist my arm.” I roll my eyes and step out of his hold, preparing to go to my bedroom, change my pants, and grab my phone. “Jesus, Axel. You’re so needy!”

His playful chuckle bounces through my kitchen while my nonchalant stroll turns to a sprint.

In my bedroom, I fling my sweatpants away, snatch a scrunchie from my side table, push my hair into a messy bun, then go to my closet and flick through the hangers.

“So who’d you fuck?” Axel’s voice is teasing. “Was he a gentleman?”

“If I’m not discussing my sex life withher, then I’m certainly not discussing it with you.” I hear the crack of a soda can opening, then the suction of our fridge door being closed. “Treat my girl right tonight, or I might have Diesel tear your balls out.” I can practicallyseethe smile on Viv’s face. “He’d love to do it.”

“Tell your boy Diesel to chill the fuck out.” Axel’s tone is only partly lighthearted. “I kinda want my twig and berries to remain intact. Ya know, for treating your girl right.”

“Stop discussing me like I’m not here!”
