“No, Flynn. You’re much better than that.”

“Well, apparently not.” Flynn half-smiles at me. “To make matters worse, it’s a two-week cruise.”

I groan. “Oh god, you’re kidding.”

“Nope.”

“You rich people…”

Flynn doesn’t get a chance to respond before Freckles nudges her black and white snout up against his shoulder. “Oh, hi,” he replies, leaning away.

Freckles tries to lick his chin, but he’s just out of reach. So, she crawls into his lap.

I smile. “She likes you.”

“Apparently,” he replies dodging her eager tongue.

I reach out and scratch her side. “She doesn’t like anybody.”

“So, you’re saying it’s a compliment.”

“Or she just has bad taste,” I say dryly.

Flynn rolls his eyes, attempting to tame Freckles’ affection with head scratches. “Ha, ha.”

For a moment, we are quiet, focused entirely on Freckles. Perhaps she’s the type to like a withholding sort of guy. Flynn walked in and acted like none of the dogs mattered and now here she is licking his chin like they’re old friends. And Flynn likes it too. He’s actually smiling and looks relaxed. That’s the power of a furry friend. “So… you came out here to tell me you’re going to your ex’s engagement party?” I finally ask.

Flynn’s body goes rigid. “That’s where the story gets funny.”

“That’swhere the story gets funny, okay…”

“I sort of told her I had a girlfriend. And she invited her to come along.”

I frown. “You don’t have a girlfriend though, right?” At least not one that I know of.

Flynn takes a break from petting Freckles to adjust his glasses. “Right… that’s sort of my predicament.”

An uneasy feeling swells in my stomach. Especially when I see how his blue eyes are boring into mine. “Why are you looking at me like that?”

“I need someone to pretend to be my girlfriend.”

I’m so stunned I don’t even notice that Snap, Crackle, and Pop are still sucking on empty bottles of milk until Pop takes a tumble trying to hop up onto my leg. “I – oh my god –” I grab the little guy and hold him to my chest, like he’s suddenly an emotional support dog. “You’re not about to ask me, are you?”

Flynn glances over his shoulder at Colin who is trapped in a cuddle puddle with a bunch of dogs. “Look, I know it’s… unconventional.”

“Oh, my God.” I squeeze Pop tighter to my chest and he whimpers. “Sorry, little guy.” I drop him back down with the other pups while they all flounder together.

“But it’s just two weeks.”

I stare at Flynn dumbfounded. “No.”

“What?”

“I’m not going to pretend to be your girlfriend. Are you insane?” I start to pull the finished bottles out of their holder.

“Stella, please, you have no idea how –”

“Flynn, I’m not doing it. There are plenty of women who would be falling over each other to spend two weeks with you,” I say firmly as I get to my feet. “Sorry you came all the way out here for nothing, but…” I trail off and then head back inside to go wash the bottles.
