“Some things I like to keep to myself, what can I say?” Stella giggles.

I look back up to see if Adelaide has clocked it and, boy, has she ever. She’s removed her sunglasses and is biting her tongue. “When did you get those, Flynn?” she asks.

Of course, she’d be surprised by them. I wasn’t in such good shape back when we were together. The gym was a part of my therapy regimen. Too bad it couldn’t make me forget her, only try and spite her with all my new muscles. “One… two years ago?”

Adelaide’s curiosity sours, her lips pouting out. “Stella’s a lucky girl.”

I glance at Stella who is standing in the water with her arms folded over her chest and… she’s blushing, I think. “You’d have to ask her that,” I say, tilting my head back smugly. “I wouldn’t want to presume.”

Stella’s eyes widen as she looks between Adelaide and me. “You know, I need to put more sunscreen on. Cash, can you help?”

Without another word, Stella swims to the opposite side of the pool and pushes herself out, hustling over to the lounge chair with all her beach sundries.

Cash looks over at me. “You heard her. She needs more sunscreen.”

“She asked you to do it,” I say.

“Are you two saving yourself for marriage or something?” Cash retorts. “Go rub some sunscreen on your girlfriend’s back.”

I scratch the back of my head, looking at Stella who is toweling off, and then back to Adelaide who… isn’t even looking at me anymore.

In fact, she’s on her feet standing with Theo, her little string bikini barely holding her in. Their fronts pressed together. They should just go find a room or have sex in the cabana if they’re going to fondle each other in public.

Guess that was an easy decision.

I stand up and walk over to Stella. She’s started rubbing the white lotion into her arms, taking measured breaths.

“Can I help?”

“Hm?” Stella looks up, hazel eyes wide.

“Cash told me I had to help because you’re my girlfriend.”

“Oh, how romantic,” Stella says. She squeezes another portion of lotion onto her hand and leans down to get her legs. I purposefully look away from her so as not to stare at her ass. “Don’t worry about it. I can get my back.”

I grab the bottle of lotion. “Stella, let me help. I told Colin I’d take care of you. Not going to let you get burnt to a crisp.”

She stands back up and puts her hands on her hips. “I’m not going to get burnt to a crisp,” she snaps.

“Would you just let me put some sunscreen on your back? I’m not asking for your hand in marriage for god’s sake.”

Stella stares at me, pursing her lips. “Fine.”

She sits on the end of the lounge with her back toward me and I sit beside her, squeezing some lotion into my palm. I rub my hands together and then eye the plane of her back. What’s the best course of action to make this as quick as possible? I start at her shoulder blades and smooth my hands from the center of her back to her shoulders.

“Sorry, I’m… I just feel weird,” Stella says softly.

“I know, it’s a weird situation.”

“I just didn’t realize how much people talking about us like we’re…” she lowers her voice, “…together.”

I hum. “Yeah, it is a little strange.” I spread the lotion down her back, digging my thumbs into her skin.

Stella giggles.

“What?”

“That… feels nice.”
