I’m starting not to care about Adelaide at all.

All those feelings I have poured into her over the past two years now all belong to Stella.

I can’t tell her this, of course. Otherwise, it might be impossible for us to part when we get back to the States. Best not to complicate things with the subjectivity of feelings when we have a plan that is measured and objective.

Today, as has become our afternoon habit, we are laying out on the bow of the boat. We are “tanning.” Although that’s really just code for fondling each other under the Croatian sun. Sometimes people join us. Cash and Gregory, or the footballers and their wives.

We behave around them. Sort of, at least.

But when it’s just us…

“Are you falling asleep?” Stella murmurs, tucking her head up against my chest.

“Hm? No.” I must have been zoning out, thoughts coming like flurrying snow. “How could I sleep when I know I don’t have a moment to waste…” I wrap my arm tighter around her and put my lips against a spray of curls on top of her head. “…being with you?”

Stella giggles. Her body relaxes fully into me. Our touch has become easier and easier with each passing day. Like it’s something we’ve both longed for.

“Baby. You’re buzzing,” Stella says.

I frown. “Is that slang for being hard or something?”

“No, it’s –”

“Because I’m always –” I kiss the hinge of her jaw. “Buzzingfor you then.”

“Flynn!” Stella smacks her hand against the pocket of my trunks. “I’m talking about your phone!”

I suddenly notice the vibrating in my pocket. “Oh, you meant like literally buzzing.”

She laughs. “But while we’re at it, I wouldn’t mind having you hard, either.”

Stella presses a few kisses to the front of my neck, and I sigh. I want to just let the phone ring, but phone calls can’t just go to voicemail when I’ve been away from the office for nearly two weeks. I fish the phone out of my pocket, trying to ignore how her touch is making me feel.

All my arousal immediately disappears when I see it’s Colin who is calling. “Stella –”

“You can answer, I’ll keep going,” she says in a lusty voice.

“It’s your brother.”

She stops, drawing away from me. Her hazel eyes are wide, with squiggled lines of fear across her brow. “Oh.”

“I should take it.” I haven’t talked to Colin since we were in Montenegro, and even then, it’s only been a few texts back and forth. The guy must be floundering, getting the VR presentation ready to go for our investors.

“Go ahead. I’ll be here,” she says, the corners of her lips drawing back with shame.

I scramble to my feet and walk to the railing of the boat to answer. “Hello?” My voice cracks.Wow, Flynn, way to sound suspicious.

“What the fuck is wrong with you.”

My heart pounds in my chest. It’s abundantly clear from the way he answers that this call has nothing to do with Wired Reality. It has to do with Stella. “You’d have to talk to my therapist about that one,” I say, attempting a lame joke.

“You crossed a fucking line.”

He knows. How does he know?Unless Adelaide somehow has a pipeline to Colin to funnel information, I’m not sure how he could possibly be upset or suspicious. “What the hell are you talking about, Colin?”

Innocent until proven guilty, I guess.

“You and Stella. You’re – you promised me you wouldn’t do anything.”
