“Oh my God, I knew it. I knew it the second I saw those photos. Neither of you is that good at pretending.” He folds his hands over his face. “And then you lied to me about it!”

I bite my lower lip. “I’m sorry.”

“I asked you and you lied to me!”

“I know, I just didn’t know what to –“

“You could have told me the truth.”

“How?! When you made it explicitly clear that we weren’t supposed to do more than just tolerate each other?”

Colin winces again. How old is he? Five?? “So let me get this straight. You and Stella started…”

“We were talking about dating when we got back to the States.”

“And then you kissed Adelaide?” Without a breath, he jumps across the room toward me and grabs the collar of my shirt. “You cheated on my sister?”

I struggle against Colin’s grip. Damn, all that CrossFit is really doing the trick. “Adelaide kissed me! I promise!”

“Likely story!”

“You’re hurting me!”

“You broke my sister’s heart!”

“Colin, I love her!”

Colin’s eyes widen and his hands go slack. I break away and try and catch my breath. “You what?” he asks in a small voice.

“I…” Did I really just say that out loud? “I think I love her.”

“You love her or youthinkyou love her?”

I feel a migraine coming on. “Colin, don’t make me say it again.”

Colin blinks. I think for a second he’s about to punch me, but instead, he opens his arms wide and embraces me, patting my back. Freckles wants in on the action too, dancing around our feet, pawing our legs.

I’m stunned. “You’re… hugging me.”

“Of course, I’m hugging you.”

“But I did the thing I wasn’t supposed to do.”

Colin pulls back and nods. “Yeah. You did.”

This doesn’t make any sense.

“Do you want her back?”

“Huh?”

“These aren’t hard questions, Madden! Stop thinking and just act.Do you want her back?!”

I stutter briefly, though my chin is nodding before the words come out. “Y-yes.”

“Are you willing to fight for her?”

“Yes.”
