Colin smiles. “Then you’ve got to get her back.”

“But what about what you said about –”

“I’m still pissed, don’t get me wrong. But if you love her and are willing to do right by her, I’m not going to stop my sister from getting the type of man she deserves.”

I give him a dopey grin. “Are you serious?”

“Yes! Now! To New Jersey! Now!”

My smile fades. “What?!”

“No time like the present!”

I shake my head. “No, I couldn’t possibly, I –”

“You want her or not?”

“What if she says no?!”

Colin and I stare at one another. That was a possibility once before when I needed her help pretending to be my girlfriend. Colin was clear then: if Stella says no, it means no. And he doesn’t have to say it again. “You at least have to give it a fair shot. One more fair shot, right?” Colin says with a shrug.

“Alright. I’ll do it.”

“Good man.”

I step away and start to reach for my suit jacket until I remember how it was torn to shreds by a reporter. “Best to leave that behind,” I say and then check my pockets for my wallet and phone. “Okay, I’m going.”

“You’re going.”

“I’m going.”

“Your feet aren’t moving.”

I look down at my feet, firmly planted in the carpet. “Yeah, I can’t move them.”

Colin gives Freckles a look. “Come on, girl. You’re a herding dog, aren’t you?”

The two of them nip at my heels until I’m out the door, and they don’t give me a chance to protest before the door is slammed in my face.

Only one thing to do now.

Chapter 18

Stella

“Ithoughtyouwerejoking about that,” I say into the phone, leaning my elbows on the reception desk.

Cash laughs through the receiver, bubbly Aussie laugh. “No, I never kid about that.”

“Well,” I reply with a grimace. “It’s not possible. I can’t take another day away from the shelter.” Especially not now that Flynn’s donation has come through. I need to dedicate all my time to planning how we are going to do construction on the yard and still have a place where all these dogs can run around. It’s a great way to stay distracted from… literally everything else.

“You don’t even know my idea yet! The whole show is going to be in honor of your shelter.”

I freeze. “What?!”

She laughs. “I knew that’d get you interested. Listen, it’s going to be a very lowkey catwalk, all elevating a good cause.”

“Wh-why? I mean, thank you, but –”
