Freckles sniffs the bagels. I grab the bag and put them out of her reach. “No…”

She huffs in annoyance.

Out of the corner of my eye, I see the cuff of his purple suit.Purple?“What the hell are you wearing?” I gasp.

Colin bends his knees and straightens his coat with a smile. “You like it?”

“It’s purple!”

He rolls his eyes. “Aubergine, Flynn. Don’t you know anything?” He dusts off the dark purple lapels and straightens out the perfectly matching dress shirt. “Cash sent it over for me to wear to the show today.”

I swallow. “That’s today… I’d forgotten.”No, you didn’t, liar.Colin mentioned it last week offhandedly, and I didn’t realize he was actually taking a day off to go to New York Fashion Week to watch Stella walk in Cash’s show.

“Obviously. You’re not dressed for it,” Colin says off-handedly and then disappears out my office door.

I laugh. “Right. Well, good thing I’m not going then.”

“Yeah, about that…” Colin calls out. “I think you should go.”

Did I just hear him correctly? I look at Freckles. She just cocks her head at me as if I’m an idiot. “And why the hell would I do that?” I ask, getting to my feet.

“Well, it’s good to be supportive, don’t you think?”

I follow him out into the living room, where he’s hooked a garment bag onto a curtain rod and is carefully unzipping it. “What the hell is that?”

Colin smiles at me over his shoulder. “Cash sent this one for you.” He tugs the garment bag down and reveals a suit exactly like his, except orange.

“I’m not going to walk around like a tangerine, Colin.”

“Close. It’s burnt sienna.”

I laugh dryly. “Alright, well, no burnt sienna. Besides, I’m not going.”

“Come on! She had it made custom for you!”

“How the hell did she get my measurements?”

Colin hesitates and then shrugs. “I’ve had them for a while, always good to have in a pinch.”

“Colin!”

“At least try it on.”

I cross my arms. “There’s no point in me going.”

“But Stella –”

“What about Stella?! She isn’t interested in hearing my side of the story. I backed off. That’s what you wanted, isn’t it?”

Colin sucks in on his lower lip. “Look, you’re miserable, Flynn.”

I start to object, but he isn’t having it.

“You’ve been a hermit for two weeks straight since you saw her. And…” He shuts his eyes. “Yes, it’s still weird that she’s my sister and you’re my best friend. Andyes, I don’t want you or any man to pressure her into something she doesn’t want.” He takes a moment and then says definitively, “But if I know you and I know her, I think you’re both letting your pride get in the way of actually communicating.”

I’ve known about my pride for a while. But Stella’s? I’d never stopped to consider that.

“One more chance. And then we can all leave it alone.”
