She smiles back, cradling my cheek in her hand. “I hope so.”

“Knock, knock! I have a visitor.”

The door creaks open; Colin emerges in a wheelchair pushed by Stella’s doctor.

“What happened?” Stella gasps.

“Shock,” I say wryly, giving her hand a squeeze.

“We tried to walk here, but he was a little unsteady on his feet, so –” the doctor explains, rolling Colin up beside me.

Colin looks at our entangled hands and then between our faces. “Well,” he says with a resigned sigh. “What did I miss?”

Stella and I both laugh.

“Nothing, really,” she says with a grin.

“Totally nothing. Just my sister and best friend having a baby together. No big… no big deal,” Colin says with a big gulp of air.

I grab my friend by the shoulder. “Hey. I owe you.”

Colin smiles at me lopsidedly. He was the biggest champion of the two of us together. He has himself to thank. “I have a few ideas of where to start with that.”

“Me too. Stella, can you set Colin up with Cash?”

She grins. “You read my mind.”

Colin goes red as a beet. “Now, wait a second –”

“Don’t act like you’re not already obsessed with her,” Stella teases. Then, she subtly squeezes my hand.

There is a lot we have to work through. Not just the two of us, but the three. And then the four. In a matter of an instant, I’ve gone from a bachelor to a family man.

And there’s no other way I’d rather have it.

Because Stella and me? Well, it just makes sense.

Chapter 22

Epilogue

Ayearandchangelater…

“Have you got everything?”

“Chef already loaded the picnic basket, towels are on the tender, and –” I slap the side of my bag. “Diaper bag is loaded.”

Cash holds out an extra diaper. “Just in case.”

I roll my eyes and snatch it from her. She’s not wrong. Always better to have too many diapers than not enough. That’s a cardinal rule of motherhood. I stick it into the diaper bag. “What are you two going to get up to while we’re gone, hm?”

Cash shrugs and glances back at Colin. My brother is enjoying looking out at the deep blue of the Med through binoculars. “I’m sure we’ll figure something out.”

“God, he’s such a nerd,” I say.

“I know,” she replies with a twinkle in her eye. “My nerd.”

I laugh. Colin and Cash were fast friends but didn’t start actually dating until last New Year’s when Cash invited him to a party… in Melbourne. Colin didn’t bat an eye and was on the first plane headed for Australia.
