I do like animals more than people. They give unconditional love and are mostly uncomplicated. I prefer that to humans disappointing me. Specifically, men. After all, what good are they?

And yet, unless it’s a rare night I don’t have plans, I come home to two beautiful creatures who will never understand me and all my complications.

I haven’t let anyone see the real me in a long time. I honestly don’t even know how to anymore.

Chapter 3

Flynn

“Whatdoyoumeanyou said you have a girlfriend namedStella?”

“Shhh! Lower your voice!” I whisper across the table, scanning the cafeteria to make sure no one is listening in. We met first thing in the morning so I could give him a play-by-play about what happened with Adelaide, and now it’s not going so well.

Colin leans his elbow on the table and starts biting on his thumbnail.

“I’m sorry. It just came out,” I say, swallowing. “First name I thought of.”

“How? How the hell was Stella the first name you thought of?”

I shrug, at a loss. “You had just been in the room, you know. Maybe it was that.”

“Rickie was in the room.Wendywas in the room. Stella wasnot–”

“I’m just trying to tell you the story, man. It doesn’t mean anything, okay?” I try to explain. To be honest, bringing up Stella sort of eludes my comprehension as well. “I just needed a name and I said Stella. It doesn’t mean that I’m actually –”

Colin winces before I say anything.

“Dude, seriously.”

“You’ve never hooked up with her, have you? You’d tell me if you did, right?” Colin says, although I’m not sure he’d be able to handle it if the answer were yes.

“Colin, the idea of Stella and me together islaughable,” I say. Stella is, for all intents and purposes, an anarchist. She’s the barefoot, commune-living type. I’ve spent enough time with her over the years since Colin and I became friends to know that our mutual disdain will always be loud and proud. “Really think about it.”

“So, you’re saying my sister isn’t good enough for you?”

I slap my hands to my face. “Jesus Christ, man!”

Colin pushes some hashbrowns around his plate. “She’s not good enough for you.”

I gape. “Colin, that’s totally not what I said.”

“You’d be lucky to have a woman like my sister.”

“Do youwantyour sister to be my girlfriend?”

Colin twists his lips to the side and grunts. “Stop.”

“Exactly.” I can’t believe I’m baiting him right back into being annoyed with me. “All I meant was… Stella and I don’t get along. You know she hates me.”

“She doesn’t hate you,” Colin retorts.

Time for me to glare.

“I’m just saying. You two have –”

“Irreconcilable differences,” I say.

“See, now I’m getting the feeling you’re into her again, and now –”
