“Why don’t we say six?” he said.

It was about four now. That would work, as Daisy was leaving at five and her roommate would have no clue that she’d be gone. “Sounds good. I’ll bring dessert if you’d like.”

His eyes moved over her quickly. Not that he could see much with her bundled up, but she was positive he was remembering another time when she wasn’t wearing anything more than her birthday suit.

“Something sweet will go down great,” he said. “Tell me the kind of beer you like.”

“What you’ve got will work,” she said.

“Then I’ll see you in a few hours.”

He checked out and she bought something quickly too so that Daisy didn’t think it was odd she came home empty handed. She also ran to a bakery and got some big brownies and vanilla cupcakes. She knew what his body felt like skin-to-skin but had no idea if he liked chocolate or vanilla.

She’d just leave that box in her car so that Daisy didn’t wonder why she had it. Or so many when she’d peek in to see the treats.

“Is it busy out there?” Daisy asked when she walked in the door.

She was gone longer than she figured since she was talking to Luke and made another stop. “Yes,” she said. “Lots of people picking up alcohol tonight.”

“Are you sure you don’t want me to stay home?” Daisy said. “I feel bad. You didn’t go home for Christmas so I wasn’t alone and here I’m leaving you tonight.”

She waved her hand and had to play this off. “Please,” she said. “It’s not the same thing and you know it. I’m going to relax. You can’t cancel last minute like this. Go and have fun.”

“If you say so,” Daisy said.

“What’s wrong? I thought you liked Ryan.”

“I do,” Daisy said. “But these are his friends and I’m not going to know anyone.”

“You get along with people well. Don’t worry about it.”

“You’re right. I think Ryan wanted me to stay the night at his place, but I’m not ready for that. I told him I’m coming home after and he knows I’ve got a roommate. I’ve said our rules before.”

Heather giggled. The two of them had rules that they could bring a guy home, but the other had to know in advance so it wasn’t awkward that one of them walked out barely dressed and came face to face with a man that they weren’t warming the sheets with.

“Do you want him to stay the night?” she asked.

“Not yet. I’m not feeling it. I like him and he’s nice. He kisses good. But I’m waiting for that heat to hit me in the gut that makes me want to shove him in a closet and not care there are others around while I jump him. I haven’t felt that yet.”

She knew that feeling well. She’d had it with Luke. The funny part was, he was the only one in her life she felt it with and he was the only man she’d had sex with that she wasn’t dating.

Could it have been the excitement of that more than anything?

No, it wasn’t that. It was just Luke himself.

“Sometimes it takes time,” she said. “I’ve been there.”

Which wasn’t a lie. “I know,” Daisy said. “But tonight won’t be the night and he knows that going in. So I’ll see you a little after midnight.”

“I’ll be here,” she said. And that would keep her in line to get home too so as not to worry her roommate.

When Daisy left with her date at five, Heather ran and took a shower, then changed into a nicer pair of jeans, a more fitted top and tried to do something with her straight hair.

Rather than look like she was trying so much, she pulled it back in a sleek ponytail, put some makeup on and said that was good enough.

She wanted to say he’d only seen her dressed up twice, but today she was looking like a hot winter storm mess and he still asked her to his place.

Unless he thought he’d get lucky again. She hadn’t given any indication that was going to happen, but she’d be clear when she arrived.
