Page 23 of A Hero For Heather

Zane had texted him this morning that the window would be done when he got home and his best friend was good to his word.

He parked his truck, went in the back door and to his room to get a change of clothes so he could shower.

It was colder than shit out and windy on top of it, so he put on sweats and a sweatshirt with socks. No reason to be barefoot on the cold floors either.

He went into the living room and saw a vacuum cleaner sitting against the wall and smiled. It looked old and he’d bet it was an extra that Zane had in his house.

He was starving and needed food but didn’t feel like cooking anything, so he pulled out some sandwich meat that he’d been using for his lunches and made yet another sandwich. This weekend he’d think about making something in a large quantity so he could heat it up at the end of the day.

He pulled his phone out to call Zane once he sat down with his sandwich.

“Thanks for fixing the window so quickly,” he said when Zane answered.

“That’s my job,” Zane said. “I just feel bad it took a few days to get here.”

“Faster than I would have expected considering it happened on Sunday night and you couldn’t order it until Monday.”

“And you still should have called me when it happened.”

“Why?” he asked around a mouthful. “I have no problem taking care of it. I probably had it done faster than you could have made it over to do it anyway.”

“True,” Zane said.

“But it looks nice,” he said. “And thanks for the vacuum. I swept a few times and thought I got it all.”

“Knowing you, you probably did,” Zane said. “But no reason to find some pieces days or weeks from now and cut your foot. Not when you’re going through the academy. You wouldn’t let anyone know and just be bleeding through your boots.”

He laughed. “So would you.”

“Nah,” Zane said. “I’ve gotten soft.”

He grinned over that comment. He wouldn’t agree because there was part of him that was extremely jealous of his best friend and the life he had now.

And if he’d been thinking of Heather for the past three weeks, he’d told himself he barely had time to cook himself dinner so he couldn’t find time for a woman.

Nothing more than a roll in the sheets and he wanted to do better by her than that.

Yet what happened? He had another roll in the sheets with her and didn’t reach out again.

She didn’t reach out to him either. Then he remembered she didn’t have his number. And if she wanted it, she’d have to let Lily know. Which she didn’t want to do.

So this went back on him tracking her down. Like going to see her on Lily’s property.

But he was at the academy when Heather was working so it wasn’t that easy either.

“I’m not so sure you’re completely soft,” he said.

“You just getting home?” Zane asked. “Kind of late.”

“A couple of the guys wanted to go to the range after.”

“And now they all know,” Zane said, laughing. “Or they will by tomorrow.”

“Yep,” he said. “But I couldn’t very well say no to it.”

He’d been a sniper in the Army. It wasn’t something he told many. Those training him knew. It was in his file. He was pretty sure that was part of why he was hired so quickly too. It’s not like there were many snipers out there.

“Of course you couldn’t. How many rounds did you get off?”
