“If you were having a conversation with your friend right now. With Daisy. If she asked you what you wanted with someone. Me or another man, what would the answer be?”

Her head went back and forth. “I’d say I’d like to get to know some guy to see if we had more in common. I know the chemistry is there between us already.”

He laughed. “It is.”

“I’ve got a job I love and put a lot of time into it. Yours is going to be the same way. Once you know where you’ll be.”

“Let’s say it's here?”

“Are you asking me if I want to get into a relationship?” she asked. He could tell she was as confused as him.

“I honestly don’t know what I’m asking other than what you want.”

“Someone I can spend time with to get to know. Not someone demanding all my time, as I don’t have a lot of it either. I’m not a demanding or controlling person and don’t want to be with someone else that is. I’m not sure what else to tell you,” she said.

“I suppose that is good enough,” he said. His hand reached out and grabbed her, tugging her closer so that she was almost on his lap, his mouth found hers and they started to make out.

Maybe he wanted to make sure that the heat and chemistry were still there. Or he wanted her to know it was still there.

Then he told himself it didn’t matter who knew.

They were making out for a solid minute when his dick decided it wanted to join the party, but she’d played it smart and had someone else in the place with her.

He finally lifted his head. “Damn,” she said. “Good thing I told Daisy to stay.”

He chuckled low in his throat. “I was going to ask if that was to avoid the temptation or not.”

“Of course it was,” she said, letting out a little giggle. “So now what?”

“I don’t know,” he said. “I want to ask if you can give me until the academy is done and I see where the next stage takes me. But I also don’t want to ask anyone to put their life on hold either. Maybe you’ll find someone else.”

“I doubt it,” she said. “I haven’t in the time I’ve been here.”

“I’m sure you’ve dated,” he said.

“I have, but you’re the only one I’ve slept with.”

He hadn’t expected her to say that. “Should I be honored?”

“Yeah,” she said. “You should.”

He laughed. She had a great personality. “Then I will be. You’ve got my number if, you know, you need to release some tension until then.”

She squinted one eye at him. “I’m like a camel and go a long time without it. Or figure out how to take care of it on my own.”

“You said that to torture me, didn’t you?”

“No more than you kissed me just now to give me something to think about.”

His fingers reached out and traced her hand. “Guess we are doing the same thing. I don’t make promises,” he said. “Never in my life. They are too hard to keep. But I want to be honest. I think the timing isn’t right at the moment.”

“Probably not,” she said. “But it’s not like I’ve had much luck with anyone else, so waiting a few months until it might be isn’t the end of the world either.”

“You’ll let me know if you find someone else?” he asked.

She frowned at him again. “I’m not even looking.”

“Neither am I. Nor was I before. But when you aren’t looking is when it happens,” he said.
