Eager To See Her

The last place Luke Remington thought he’d end up when he left the service was Mystic, Connecticut.

But then again, he didn’t think he’d ever leave the service.

It was the only stable home life he’d ever had. Considering he’d been to war a few times and seen a lot of good men die, it was crazy to say that was stable.

Anything was better than what he lived before he turned eighteen and took off for a new life.

And fifteen months ago when he came here for his mentor and best friend’s wedding—and saw what living a normal life was like—he decided maybe he deserved a shot at that too.

He’d seen too many men die or be maimed. Their lives were altered forever.

Shit, he’d just run into one of them at the bar and hadn’t expected that.

Trace Mancini had busted up his back in an explosion and lost his closest friend at the same time.

So yeah, after Zane’s wedding he’d already decided he’d had enough and started to look into getting out when his last tour was up.

He’d been willing to go anywhere and figured the only thing he knew in his life was the service or law enforcement. It seemed the logical solution to search anywhere in that field for a job.

Zane told him the Connecticut State Police were hiring and one thing led to another.

Here he was moving into Zane’s old cottage by the water to live during his time in the academy, which was still over an hour away. But it’s not like he’d know where he’d end up so signing any year long leases didn’t make sense either.

He wouldn’t be around much anyway. Once he was stationed, he’d figure out where to get a place, but with Connecticut being a smaller state, he was hoping he could stay here and commute.

They’d work themselves out in a few months.

Right now, he was going to enjoy his night with a woman that hadn’t left his mind since he was here last.

She was on the floor now, not in a dress this time, but a short skirt and tights. He remembered those legs of hers wrapped around him more than once.

She turned her head, caught his eyes on hers, her face flushed and she took off running in the other direction.

He wanted to laugh but wouldn’t. He knew she was a shy girl that came out of her shell that night.

Was he disappointed she was gone when he walked out of the bathroom that morning? Yep, he was. But he was leaving in a few days anyway so it was for the best. She had made what would have been an awkward goodbye easier for him.

Had she wanted his number or asked to keep in touch, he would have said yeah, but he wasn’t sure how much he would have done it.

But the more time that went by, the more he couldn’t get her out of his mind, and when this all started to fall into place months ago, he was eager to see her again.

He didn’t think it’d be this soon. Zane asked him to come to the party and he wasn’t about to say no, as he didn’t feel like sitting at Zane’s house by himself.

“You always did like to stand in the doorway and watch,” Zane said, moving over to him.

“Just scoping the place out,” he said.

“Why don’t you come to our table and have a seat,” Zane said. “Food will be out soon.”

He followed his best friend to the table and sat and decided to let the night play out as it would.

“Dude,” Luke said to Trace Mancini an hour later at their table. “I can’t believe you made Captain. You always had your face in a book.”

“So did you,” Trace said to Luke. “You know why I left the service, but why did you?”
