“Oh,” he said. “I can come in tomorrow,” he said. “I don’t go to work until Tuesday now.”

“Nope,” she said. “I need to be on my own to prove I can do it. I mean, if you want to come over and hang out with me for something more than being a nurse, then great. But if that is why you’re here, I’m good without it.”

“Not sure how much of a nurse I could be.”

“Sit,” she said. “I don’t like you looming over me.”

He sat in the chair facing her. He’d like to sit by her but didn’t want to be by her leg either.

“There,” he said.

“Thanks. Anyway, I’m getting along well. I’ve got a doctor’s appointment on Tuesday with Dr. James. I like that I’ve got this soft removal-able cast on for a few more days, but I’m afraid my leg is going to flop when he takes it off at the appointment for my permanent one.”

“You’ve got plates holding it together,” he said. “I don’t think that will happen.”

“So I’ve been told and found out myself with research. But there is the other part of me that worries I might pass out when I see the incisions on my leg. I’ve got lots of things I can do to aid in the scar healing, but it will always be there.”

“Lots of people have scars. Nothing wrong with them. It’s a sign of strength.”

“It is,” she said. “Or I’m sure I’ll feel that way at some point.”

“Wish I wasn’t working on Tuesday, or I’d bring you. Or are you going to drive there?”

“I don’t have a car now,” she said. “I need to figure that out too. Daisy is going to bring me. I talked to my insurance company yesterday. My car is totaled. I’ll have a check next week for the value of it. I’ll have to see what I’m interested in. I’ll be out of work for a few more weeks I think, so no rush. It’s not like I’m going to run to the store or anything.”

“If you need someone to take you car shopping, I can do it on one of my days off.”

“So you can be a man and make sure I don’t get taken advantage of?”

It was the look in her eyes that told him he better tread carefully on how he answered this. “I am a man,” he said.

“True,” she said.

“But in this case, I just figured I’d go with you if Daisy couldn’t. Nothing more than that.”

“Honestly, as much as it pains me to say this, I probably would be taken advantage of being a woman. More so going in there on crutches.”

“With your bruised face and glasses and hobbling along, they might feel sorry for you,” he said.

“Not funny, Luke.”

“It kind of was. But if you want me to go with you, I’ve got Monday off next week and then the following Sunday—not sure dealerships are open then—then Monday through Wednesday the following week. I start nights on Thursday night. So that day off too, but I’m sure I’ll sleep at some point.”

“Is that how it works?” she asked.

“Four days on, four days off. The same when it’s nights.”

It would take some time for him to get into a routine he was sure, but it’s not like he had much going on in his life.

Having the four days off in a row would be a good way to get things done and then see Heather too. Even if she was working, they could get dinner together. When she was back on her feet more.

“That isn’t too bad,” she said.

“That doesn’t count overtime or when I’m called in,” he pointed out. “Guess we should talk about that. This job is a lot of hours. Some of the guys say they could work sixty or seventy hours in a week if there are people out or they’re called in to cover other areas.”

In his mind he saw the money he’d be making. More than he ever thought he would.

He had a nice savings account that he was proud of, but this would just pad it. In time he could consider getting his own place.
