Page 63 of A Hero For Heather

“Hey,” she said. “I’m getting good on these. It’s been like five weeks at this point.”

“So five weeks since Luke was your sexy hero. Is that when or why you started to date? And remember, I’ll know if you’re lying or not.”

The funny part was, she had a feeling that Poppy would know if she was lying but wasn’t sure she wanted to be honest either.

“What do you think?” she asked.

“I think something has been going on with you two since the Christmas party. Maybe even longer, though he hasn’t been around for over a year. I saw him watching you, but I kept it to myself. I saw you watching him at Lily’s wedding too. I figured you’re outgoing enough to make a move if you wanted. Or he was. But I also knew he had a lot going on in his life too. Then bam, he’s working and you’re dating. No way you’ve got the hero complex that maybe I would have fallen for years ago.”

Just like she thought, Poppy was smarter than anyone gave her credit for. Or at least when it came to men.

“We’d talked on and off since the Christmas party, but he has had a lot up in the air.” This wasn’t a lie at all. “The accident isn’t what started our dating though.”

“I got more out of you than I thought I would,” Poppy said. “And good for you.”

“Thanks,” she said. “I think.”

She turned when Poppy moved away and started to hobble her way to a chair to sit. Though she felt like she was getting around pretty well on the crutches and had been to work—though sitting most of the day—she still hadn’t stood as long as she was today.

“How are you feeling?” Violet asked.

“Much better. I can’t wait to get this cast off.”

“At least it’s summer so you’ve got shorts on rather than pants to fit over the cast.”

“That is a plus,” she said.

She was glad Lily didn’t care that she was wearing shorts to work. She normally wore jeans at the very least with a nice shirt and smock over it if she was getting dirty with things. If she was going into the office, she put nice pants on. She didn’t own a lot of skirts or dresses and thought of buying some to get through this, but she had plenty of long cotton shorts.

Besides, she needed something better than her dress shoes on her feet to move too. Or her one foot.

Though she’d been told she was healing faster than normal when she had her x-ray earlier in the week.

“How much longer do you need the cast?” Violet asked.

“Hopefully only a few more weeks,” she said. “But I might be able to ditch the crutches in another two weeks. I’ll get x-rays again and if that is the case, I can switch to one crutch for a week or so until I feel steady enough and then I’ll get another cast that I can remove at night but only use to walk on during the day. I hope to be cast free before the end of August, but that is still six weeks out. Not the end of the world. It could have been much worse.” Or at least the worst case in her mind.

“That’s right,” Violet said. “You could have had burns added to it all. If not for Luke, I’d hate to think what would have happened.”

“I have to admit it’s kept me up a few times at night, but it’s getting better.”

Violet leaned in to hug her. “We are so glad you’re okay. And even happier that you’re dating Luke. Trace is in heaven having some army buddies here. He didn’t know Zane before, but he has more of a connection with Luke because of Kyle.”

“I think it does Luke good to be around people that understand him,” Heather said. Violet gave her a look. “What?”

“For two people who have only dated a few weeks, you seem to know him well.”

“Didn’t you think you knew Trace well after a few weeks?” she asked. What more was she going to say at this point?

Violet laughed and wiggled her eyebrows. “That’s true. But I saw Trace more than you probably see Luke. Or maybe I’m wrong. Either way, I’m sure Lily will tell you, the military men, they kind of need to be handled differently.”

“I’m learning that,” Heather said, smirking.

Violet moved away and she found a chair and sat.

It wasn’t just the time it took for her and Luke to finally start dating but the fact that now it’d been out in the open for over two weeks and they still hadn’t done much more than kiss and have their hands wandering around for a bit.

She didn’t know what his problem was and what was holding him back, but tonight she was going to his place and finding out.
