“I don’t like being alone,” Ivy said. “I’ve been here almost a year now and haven’t done much dating. I guess when I moved here I didn’t think it’d be this hard.”
“Because you’re trying too hard,” Heather said. “Just like Jasmine said. Look at everyone here. No one was trying and it landed in their lap. Myself included.”
“Because Luke was all sexy saving you from a burning car,” Ivy said, giggling. “What woman wouldn’t fall for that?”
“A lot of women,” Jasmine said.
Heather looked at Jasmine and rolled her eyes. “It is a nice side benefit but not what I’m looking for in a man,” she said.
He was glad to hear that, but since they had something going on before the accident, it’s not like he had any doubt.
“I don’t know,” Ivy said. “It just stinks is all. I’m not sure I’ve ever been single this long in my life before.”
“You focus too much on it,” Heather said. “Don’t. I never did.”
“It’s not the same for men,” Ivy said. “Right?”
She was looking at Luke and he was trying to figure out how he got dragged into this. “I never put much thought into it,” he said. “I’ve been a little busy with work. Not everyone wants to be with someone in my position. Especially if they don’t like being alone and I used to be in other countries.”
“Yeah,” Ivy said. “A man in uniform is sexy, but I think that would be harder for me. I don’t know if I could be with someone in a relationship and have him be gone for weeks at a time.”
“Months,” he said. “Years. It’s not weeks.”
Ivy gave a mock shiver. “No way. I’ve gone so long without a male touch, but since I’m single, it’s fine. I’m not the type to just pick a guy up for sex. But knowing I had someone to give it to me but he wasn’t around? Totally couldn’t do it. Sorry.”
Ivy got up and moved away after that statement to get some food.
“Sorry she is like that,” Jasmine said. “She doesn’t get it.”
“It’s not for everyone,” Luke said. “I know that. Knew it going in. But again, I wasn’t going into the service thinking of a family or relationship. I was going in for me.”
Heather’s hand moved up and down his leg again. This time in comfort and not in a sexual caress. “I hear this from my brothers. They are doing what they want in life and focusing on that and the good work they do. They said if there is a woman out there for them, they will find her, but they aren’t looking either.”
It was the first she’d said that. Or said it quite like that.
“I think that is a good attitude to have in general,” Jasmine said. “But Ivy is young yet and doesn’t understand.”
“She’s only two years younger than you,” Heather said.
“Young in her mentality. She’s always needed more attention than the rest of us. She’s come a long way since moving here but has a bit to go too. Oh, Cori is crying. I’ll be back.”
“Don’t let what Ivy said get to you,” Heather said. “I don’t think that or feel it.”
“I know,” he said. Or he hoped.
“But since you are around now I do wonder what is going on.”
“Meaning what?”
She leaned closer and whispered in his ear. “Sex. I hope you aren’t waiting for this cast to be gone because there is no way I’m waiting that long when it’s not even a secret that we are dating.”
Guess she put him in his place.
