Page 96 of A Hero For Heather

Heather knew it would turn into this and she was fine with it too. She and Jasmine had been close before Cori was born, but she knew Jasmine had other things to focus on and now with her other sister in the area too.

“They are going great.”

“I’m happy for you. I can’t imagine being an only child like he is. Not when the rest of us have been surrounded by siblings.”

“I don’t think he has a problem with it,” she said.

“Probably not if you haven’t known any differently,” Jasmine said.

She wasn’t going to talk too much about Luke. He liked his privacy and it wasn’t her place. “No,” she said. “I think Zane is the closest thing he’s ever had as a brother.”

“See, it all worked out. We seem to find our own here and it revolves around those three sisters.”

“Crazy how the world works, don’t you think?” she asked.

She’d been thinking about that more in the past two years since she moved here. How everything or everyone had this six degrees of separation thing with the sisters.

“I do,” Jasmine said.

“What can I help you with today? Or are you just trying to get some information out of me?”

“Nah,” Jasmine said. “Not that.”

“Is there a party in here and I’m not invited?” Violet said, coming in. Heather didn’t normally have this many people in her greenhouse.

“Only if you’ve got wine. Or beer. Chocolate works in a pinch. Something to loosen me up,” she said.

“Is that all Luke had to do to get you at the wedding?” Violet asked.

Her jaw dropped. “What? What did you hear?”

Jasmine and Violet burst out laughing. “Nothing. It was a joke. But by the look on your face, I’m thinking something happened and you are keeping it secret.”

She narrowed her eyes. Luke would never say a word. Daisy wouldn’t either.

“Nothing to say,” she said.

“Oh,” Jasmine said. “I believe there is something to say, but you are choosing not to.”

“I only said that,” Violet said, “because he caught your eye that night like he did a lot of us.”

“That’s right,” Jasmine said. “That quiet broody man. He was smiling, but you could tell it was almost a front. His eyes kept going to you. Just like at the Christmas party. Now you are together and me thinks there’s a little secret somewhere.” Jasmine was almost dancing around as Poppy did at times.

“I think Jasmine is right,” Violet said.

Heather laughed at the two of them. She wouldn’t admit it because she didn’t ever want anyone to think poorly of her.

Maybe it was too many years of her mother saying the things she had, but it sure did feel good to have this banter with them.

“Maybe,” she said. “Or maybe not.”

“We know I’m the last one to force people to say anything in regards to secrets,” Violet said. “But, since I’m engaged to someone who has seen the same as Zane and Luke, I can understand a little of your relationship.”

“I know you can,” she said. “I appreciate that, Violet.”

“I want you to know you can talk to me anytime you want. Trace, he’s a talker. He’s been an open book with me about his past and what he saw, what happened to him. What he lost. Zane, he never said much, per Lily.”

“Luke is a vault,” she admitted.
