“I love you too,” he murmurs before he closes the gap between us and kisses me. I’ve lost track of the number of kisses we’ve shared now, but this one will forever be my favourite. “I’ve been wanting to tell you for a little while now.”

“You should’ve.”

“I had a whole plan,” he says. “I wanted it to be perfect.”

“Thisisperfect.”

“You two are sickening.”

We pull apart to find Nel leaning against the doorframe. “Can you stop being so cute and horribly in love?”

“Nope,” Finn says with a grin. “Is everything all right back in there?”

“Marion and Ernest have gone. Dad looked like he wanted to fight both of them, but Mom stepped in asked them to leave. She wanted to come in and talk to you guys, but I said I’d check in on you two first.”

“She’s not mad at me, is she?” I ask, suddenly nervous. Have I ruined the whole party and tainted Juliette and Henry’s view of me forever.

Nel snorts. “No, not at all. I told her what happened, and she’s just glad you defended Finn. We both are. Thank you.”

“You don’t have to thank me,”

“I know I don’t have to, but I want to.” She crosses the distance between us, effortlessly shoves Finn out of the way, and pulls me into a deep hug. “You’re good for him, Amber.”

“He’s good for me too.”So good.

Nel clears her throat when she pulls away, and I pretend like I don’t notice that her eyes are a little glassy now. “Feel free to re-join the party if you want to, but…” She fumbles around in her pocket and pulls out a set of keys. Finn’s brows shoot into his hairline the second he spots them. “I think it’s probably about time Finn tells you what his big surprise is.” She tosses the keys to me and gives me a wink. “Enjoy.”

Curiosity tinges through me. “What does this open?”

Nel just laughs and Finn glares at her retreating form as she leaves the kitchen.

“Finn?”

He sighs like this is quite possibly the worst thing that could ever have happened to him, but there’s a light in his eyes that betrays him. I think he looks excited. Or is that nerves I see? Maybe a mix of the two? He reaches for my hand and squeezes it tightly. “Come on, sweetheart.”

“Where are we going?”

“Do you trust me?”

“You know I do.”

I trust him implicitly with my heart and everything else that comes with it.

“Then keep on trusting me, just for a little while longer.”

AMBER

We’reabout an hour’s drive from his parents’ house, coasting down a quiet road that cuts through a thick, dense forest. There’s a wall of lush greenery on either side of us, and the rapidly setting sun casts a beautiful orange glow over the landscape.

It’s stunning, but I’m struggling to appreciate it. My mind is racing like never before as I stare at the set of keys in my hand. I’ve been squeezing them so tightly, I think they might leave a permanent imprint on my skin.

“You’re not even going to give me a tiny hint?”

“Nope.”

“This is very unfair.”
