“We need some sort of listening device that can’t be detected,” Isaiah said with frustration. “Then you could sneak into the room and place them. That would surely give us something to use to get close to him.”

“She’s not sneaking in anywhere,” Sampson snapped. “This is all too fucking dangerous. And what if he knows nothing?”

“Well, what else am I meant to do?” she yelled. “Just give up? I can’t give up. I can’t!”

She kicked the wall.

The next-door neighbor thumped back. “Shut the fuck up. I’m listening to the game!”

“Yeah? And I’m supposed to give a shit? I have to listen to you jerking off every night to porn, so consider this payback, bitch!”

There was silence on the other side. Shit. Now, she would have to make sure she avoided that sweaty asshole every time she came or went out of her apartment.

She was aware of her friends speaking frantically and turned back to them.

They were all gaping up at her.

“You need to move. Now,” Abe barked, surprising her. That was usually something that would come from Sampson.

But the big giant was still looking at her in surprise.

“I can’t believe you said that to him,” Immy said, her cheeks red.

Jenner had his hands over her ears, and she pushed at his hands impatiently.

“Jenner, I’m not a child. Cat, do you think that was smart?” Immy asked.

“No. It wasn’t smart at all. But it was the truth, and I was pissed. Don’t worry, I’ll avoid being around him for a few days and he’ll forget about it. What do I do, guys?”

She slipped into a chair and stared at them dejectedly. She’d felt sure Alejandro would be back. He’d stared at her like he wanted to devour her.

Sure, it had been strange. She’d never had a man look at her like that.

Like he considered her to be his.

You belong to me.

I’m in charge.

I prefer Sir.

Fuck. Hearing him demand that she call him Sir . . . she’d never considered herself submissive. But that . . . that had done something to her.

Alejandro De Leon was a dangerous man. And not only because he ran the biggest criminal syndicate in the United States. He was also detrimental to her state of mind.

“Here’s what you do next,” Jenner told her. “You wait.”

“I hate waiting,” she whined. She’d already waited so long.

“We know,” Abe replied with a grin. “We know you well, Cat.”

She huffed out a breath. “Maybe I should try to get a job in one of his other businesses? I need to get a job as his assistant or cleaner.”

“He doesn’t have an assistant,” Isaiah pointed out. “And from what we know, his housekeeper has been with him for years. Besides, he’ll find that a bit suspicious if you just turn up in a different role in one of his other businesses.”

“Yes, I know,” she grumbled. She just hated having to be logical and patient.

That wasn’t who she was. She liked to get out there and do something.

“Just wait. He’ll come back to you,” Abe told her.

“What if I didn’t make enough of an impression? What if he’s forgotten all about me?”

They all shared a look.

“Cat, you’re stunning. There’s no way he didn’t notice or that he’s forgotten you. He’ll be back,” Immy told her.

“Even if he does come back, there’s no guarantee he’ll want me working the back room.”

Actually, she’d bet everything she had, which admittedly wasn’t much, that he wouldn’t want her anywhere near him. Or those other men.

“Good,” Sampson said. “I don’t like you being around those criminals, it’s way too dangerous.”

“I’ve dealt with dangerous men before,” she pointed out. “It wasn’t like I didn’t have to avoid the machinations of evil pricks at the Camp.”

“Yes, but then you had us to back you up,” Jenner told her. “You’re there on your own and we don’t like it. At least let us send Isaiah to you.”

“No. You guys have your own lives and I’ve got this covered. I just need to be prepared for when he comes back. I need to find some way to get rid of Starla.”

“Don’t do anything rash,” Abe warned. “You don’t want to play your hand too early. Besides, he might get suspicious if something happens to Starla again.”

Fuck.

“I hate it when you’re right.”

“I’m always right,” Abe said arrogantly.

Bastard.

“Fine. I’ll be patient and wait. But he better fucking hurry up. Or I’m going to have to come up with a Plan B.”

And that plan was bound to be way more reckless than Plan A.

But she didn’t say that.

Mainly because they all already knew it.

“So you’ve set a trap?” Reuben asked.

“Sí,” Alejandro replied as the two of them sat in the back of his car. “I had The Scot and Cairn talking about the drop of guns tonight where the rat could hear.”

“And you think that whoever planted the rat in your ranks will discover this information and send their men to intercept the drop?”
