“No, I am a Special Agent, but my job is a lot more complicated than that. For this job I am assigned the title of detective.” It would have to be, and I’m not even hurt he kept it from me until now. Until he knew he could trust me.

“How long have you worked for the FBI?”

“I was twenty-six the first time Miles and I applied. He was accepted, but I was denied. I waited a year and applied again. I turned thirty-four back in December, so just about eight years.”

“You’re thirty-four?” This information surprises me more than the news that he’s an FBI agent. I can totally picture him in that navy-blue jacket with bold yellow writing on it.

His head jerks back. “Yeah.”

“You’re seven years older than me.”

“Is that a problem?”

“No, you just don’t look thirty-four.” I sit up and put my hands against his chest, and his arms tighten around me. “I’m not going anywhere.” I shake my head. “Well, I am, but that’s just to the bathroom, because Kingston will be up soon and I need to shower.” His hand slides up my back and wraps around the nape of my neck under my hair.

“You’re not pissed?”

“No. I understand why you’d wait to tell me something as big as that,” I say quietly, then tip my head to the side. “Do you have any other secrets?”

“You’ve got all of me.”

I’ve got all of him?

My stomach melts as his eyes scan over my face.

“Jesus, what the fuck am I going to do with you?” he asks, and my heart screams, Love me! He leans up to capture my mouth with his, and when he pulls back, his eyes are soft. “Let’s go get cleaned up.”

Biting my lip, I maneuver myself off him and the bed and walk into the bathroom. He follows me inside, getting rid of the condom while I turn on the shower. As I tie up my hair, I lock my eyes on his in the mirror when he steps behind me, then his eyes wander over my face, chest, and stomach as his hands roam over each part before covering my belly.

“What are you thinking?” I ask, covering his hands with mine and feeling a twinge of unease for the first time. I know that feeling is ridiculous; he’s seen every inch of me before. But where he’s got about zero percent body fat, I have rolls and dimples.

“Just trying to figure out how Bowie could be so fucking stupid.” He drops his lips to my shoulder. “You were too good for him, Miranda.” His eyes meet mine in the mirror once more. “Hell, you’re too good for me, but I’m too selfish to let you go.”

“I’m not too good for you.”

“You are, but I’m gonna let you continue to think you aren’t, because that works in my favor,” he smiles, and what Lizzy said all those weeks ago comes back to me as my heart twists.

“I graduated high school by sheer luck.” I whisper watching his smile fade away. “I didn’t go to college, I’m a single mom and not to mention the fact that I should probably lose some weight.” I shake my head. “If anything you’re too good for me.”

“Don’t do that.” He turns me around to face him then crowds me back against the counter. “You graduated when you could have dropped out, you got your license to do hair and yeah you’re a single mom, but that shit wasn’t by choice.” He lifts me onto the counter and places himself between my spread thighs. “You’re so fucking beautiful that just looking at you gets me hard. Every fucking inch of you fills my hands perfect, and honestly, I’ll be pissed if you lose weight.” He grabs my face. “You’re a great fucking mom to Kingston and I’m a luck fucking bastard.” His eyes roam mine. “Tell me that you understand that, that you believe me.”

With my heart going haywire I search his eyes for a lie but don’t see one. “I believe you. But you believe me too right?” I whisper and his jaw clenches as his gaze roams over my face.

“Yes.” He clips then drops his head back to his shoulders and mutters “Fuck, now I’m pissed because I can’t fuck you like I want to right now.” I rub my lips together to keep from smiling and he looks me, his eyes narrowing. “That shits not funny, I don’t have another condom and I’m not ready to answer the ten million questions Kingston would have about what I’m doing to his mom if he wakes up.”

“Sorry.” I giggle and he shakes his head before kissing me and lifting me off the counter.

“Get your ass in the shower.” He grumbles ushering me in under the warm spray and I fight the urge to laugh.
