“That’s sweet,” she said. “Thank you.”

“You’re sweet, Dora. And no thanks are necessary. See you tomorrow?”

“Yes, Sir,” she said, and when she turned to walk down the hall, Alastair leaned against the wall and admired the soft curves of her body. For the first time since he had come to Rawhide Ranch, he was experiencing attraction for a Little.

Chapter 7

“So, you’re Dora?” The nurse wore a starched white uniform and cap along with a smile that was as genuinely friendly as her greeting. “I’m Nurse Cain.”

“Yes. How do you do?” Dora removed one arm from where it was folded across her breasts to extend a hand to Nurse Cain. She kept the other across her chest. Getting undressed had been the first hurdle; years of taunting had left her ashamed of her body and the flaws she perceived—the fupa, the wobbly bottom, the heavy thighs, and the pillowy breasts. Even now her arm was pushing them in and upward so they wouldn’t be just laying across the mound of her belly.

The second hurdle had been standing on the scale. An aide had recorded her weight. Dora had looked away as the aid slid the little lower weight from the 150-pound slot to the 200-pound slot and edged the top weight up and up so that the little needle would balance for a perfect reading. She held her breath, praying the aide wouldn’t read the weight aloud. She didn’t.

Now the nurse was looking at her chart. “Your blood pressure looks good.” She clicked the tip of her ballpoint pin before smiling at Dora. “Any health concerns?”

Dora felt heat rush to her face. The reason the nurse didn’t bring up the subject of Dora’s weight was because she was expecting her to do it.

“Um… I’m fat.”

Nurse Cain put a hand on her shoulder. She wasn’t much older than Dora but there was something about her that was motherly about her. “Yes, you are above the standard for weight for a Little your height, but that’s only a health concern if it’s causing you physical or emotional problems.” She paused. “How do you feel about your weight?”

“I don’t want to talk about it,” she said, and this was true. She felt guilty saying this; Nurse Cain only wanted to help, but it was a delicate subject she’d only discussed with Dr. Weston and no matter how many times he told her that being Little was a state of mind and had nothing to do with size, she still felt too big for the role.

“I understand,” Nurse Cain said. “We don’t have to talk about it, just know that some people spend a lifetime struggling with their weight. Some work to take it off; others accept that their weight is part of who they are. Neither choice is wrong; what matters is whether you are happy.” She paused. “Have you ever had a cholesterol test?”

“No.”

“Have you ever had any of these symptoms?” The nurse rattled off a list of things that included excessive thirst and hunger, increased urination, vision problems—all things Dora knew could indicate diabetes. She had none of them, just as she didn’t have joint pain or back pain.

Nurse Cain checked Dora’s ears and had her open her mouth so she could look at her throat. She palpated the lymph nodes along her jawline and had her lie down and wait for her examination.

Another nurse entered the room. Nurse Cain introduced her as Nurse MacIntosh. She was a tall woman with a far more business-like air.

“And how are we today?” she asked as she slid on her gloves. At the end of the table, Nurse Cain was raising the stirrups. Dora wished she could be anywhere else; she hadn’t had a pelvic exam in several years.

“Fine,” she said, but her voice was quavering. The nurses exchanged knowing glances over the examination table.

“There’s nothing to be scared of.” Nurse MacIntosh moved to stand between Dora’s legs. Nurse Cain situated herself at Dora’s side and offered a comforting hand to hold.

“I’ll be taking a Pap smear. We’ll also test you for any STDs.”

“You don’t really need to do screenings for STDs,” Dora said.

“We hear that a lot.” Nurse MacIntosh said. “If I had a dollar for every Little who told me they’d only been with one or two people, but if those people have had other partners.”

“I haven’t had any partners.”

Nurse MacIntosh raised her eyebrows. “A virgin?” She cocked her head. “Still a virgin after being in the lifestyle?”

“I’ve not… well… I’ve not really been in the lifestyle. The Ranch is my first exposure.”

“No Daddy or Mommy? No Dom or Domme? No Top?”

“No.”

“Unusual, but not unheard of. Thank you very much for telling me. It makes a difference in the equipment I’ll be using,” Nurse MacIntosh said, nodding at the other nurse before she continued speaking. “Still the STD testing is standard procedure, and everything is free of charge here, so you’re not to worry.”

Dora tracked Nurse Cain with her eyes as the woman removed a shiny tool from the tray at Dora’s feet and returned to hand the same item in a smaller size to Nurse MacIntosh who thanked her.
