I reached into my pocket and pulled it out. Gage. Double crap. I was weak. I slid my finger across the screen to open my phone and read the two text messages.

Pad thai and zombie shit?

I’m not liking the silence, Shiloh.

I scowled at the last text. You sure as hell liked it just fine today, I thought. I should ignore this, but then was that allowed? Was it dangerous to piss him off? Ugh. I wanted to respond, and those were just excuses to make me feel better about it.

Turkey sandwich, popcorn, and a horror movie.

I dropped my phone beside me and grabbed a handful of popcorn.

You like horror movies now?

Interesting. I guessed I hadn’t liked them before, and he knew that. It seemed like something only those close to me would know. I needed to write that on the list.

Yes.

I was not giving him any more words than necessary.

Do you still like rocky road ice cream with potato chips?

What? Seriously? I had eaten that? Now, he was teasing me.

Please tell me you’re joking.

Although I was going to have to try it now, just to see.

Nope.

He was telling me things about myself that gave away how well he had known me. It was tempting to keep this up and see what else I could find out.

Hershey Kisses dipped in peanut butter?

That sounded good. I looked over at my pantry and thought about the Hershey Kisses in there. I did like those. I needed to buy some peanut butter.

I’ll let you know.

He didn’t say anything for a while, and I put the phone down, disappointed our conversation had ended. I wasn’t sure what was going on with the movie, but I finished the popcorn while trying to catch up. My thoughts kept going off to places they didn’t need to be, and I reined them back in. Any day now, Uncle Neil could get a replacement nurse, and I wouldn’t see Gage anymore.

That caused a knot in my stomach that needed to go away. That man was not for me.

My phone dinged again, and I picked it up and read the text.

Watch Gossip Girl. Prime has it. I checked.

I picked up the controller and found it under television shows. I clicked on it and sat back to see what it was about.

Fourteen

Shiloh

Gage was sitting up with his breakfast on the table in front of him when I walked into the room. Today, he would have to start getting up and going to the bathroom, trying to walk around some more. On the drive over here, Uncle Neil had gone through a list of things to have Gage do, and then he had dropped me off, not coming inside. I put my bag down on the chair and met his gaze.

“You watchGossip Girl?” he asked before taking a drink from the coffee cup.

“Three episodes before I made myself quit and go to bed,” I admitted.

He looked back at the television. “Guess not everything’s changed then.”
