“Don’t trouble on my account. My suit is hanging on your line. It should be dry in an hour or so.”

She settled on meeting the bright blue gaze directly. “You don’t say.”

“Hot chocolate is ready!” Amadine called out.

Ondine didn’t run but just because he was standing in her doorway. She flattened herself against the doorway and eased past him. Pain shot through her, and she gasped. Geero gripped her arm and held her up. “Are you all right?”

“Um, I am making more armoured tissue. I got hit in the spine with a rocket launcher. Well, with a rocket.”

Geero asked, “Can I see?”

“It isn’t done yet. Right now, it is shattered tissue in gross colours. The titanium is filling in between dead cells.” She got herself back on her feet, and he helped her walk into the kitchen.

Amadine smiled. “How’s the baby?”

“She’s good.”

“She was the target.”

Ondine froze. “What?”

“You have impressive genes which they wanted to grab. I peeked at the com you got off the guy behind the house.” She grimaced and nodded. “They were really insistent on getting through that wall. They had to come to my room because it was the only one with a light on.”

Ondine watched Amadine put eleven marshmallows in her mug. “The baby is fine. The mission was a distraction.”

Amadine murmured, “We can move to the house in town until she’s born.”

“You can’t stand town.”

“Yalida has a guesthouse outside of town. We can stay there. I can help watch the kids. I just need to buy them new tech, and it’s perfect.”

Ondine nodded and said, “Call Yalida and Clavia, and find out if they are willing to host us.”

Amadine shrieked in joy and ran off to the study to make a call.

“She likes your friends?”

“Oh, yes. Yalida was the friend who got me out of the tunnel. Clavia was there as well.” She smiled and walked around to pour him a hot chocolate.

She looked at him. “How many marshmallows?”

He smiled. “Whatever you want to give me.”

She gave him six and handed the mug over to him with a smile. He took a sip and set the mug down.

“I still want to see your back.” He chuckled. “And I want to see that look in your eyes again when you look at me.”

She nodded and opened her suit, peeling it to the waist and turning around.

“So, they launched a rocket at you?” His tone was clipped.

“Yeah. The suit can only absorb so much pressure. My body takes the rest.”

She felt his fingers run down her back. Her goose bumps spread rapidly with that light contact. She shivered and said, “Have you seen enough?”

“Does it hurt?”

“Oh, sure. I was just lucky it is soft tissue and not organs. They are a bugger to repair.”
