“I can get a new one.”

“Wait. Were you in court today?”

“You remembered. Yes, I was. I had to testify as to my findings, and when that was done, I went to lunch with my mother.”

Ondine smiled.

“There is a hotel a few miles down the road if needed.” Geero tried to look innocent. He did not succeed.

Dinner was cleared up, and a space was arranged for the impromptu competition.

Ondine showed him how they were going to be competing by going first. She hardened the soles of her bodysuit, started some music, and the teens gathered as she started to stamp and turn to the music.

When the kids joined her on top of the music, it started to sound like a locomotive building speed. The wood vibrated, their feet thudded, and Ondine grinned as they stepped in time with her. When the song ended, they laughed and hugged each other.

Amadine looked at her and sighed. “Shit. That is going to be tough to beat.”

She slipped on some hard soles, and Ondine stepped aside. The music was changed up, and Amadine started stepping.

The kids laughed and joined in. Yalida and Clavia got their own soles on, and the party was on.

Ondine smiled and sat back with Geero. “So, that is stepping. It started with the Uraddan actives who had to march to and from their work, unable to attend any kind of entertainment. They started to walk in cascading rhythms in the streets until they were stopped. As it was a group effort, they could not stop us from the slow music that only we were listening for.”

She chuckled. “This is the evolution of that.”

Geero was watching and listening. “Wow.”

She nudged him with her thigh. “Want to try?”

“I think I will leave this to the professionals.”

Ondine cuddled up against him and leaned her head on his shoulder. “It’s a fun thing, and we didn’t have many fun things.”

He turned and pressed a kiss to her forehead. “Have you found more fun things since then?”

“Yeah. Amadine is hilarious. She keeps me focused on the future and not the past.”

“And now the baby is doing the same.”

“Because Amadine engineered it.” Ondine sighed. “Damn. She has me wrapped around her little finger.”

“She does, but she means well.” He murmured it slowly.

Amadine was sweating, but the music got faster.

Clavia brought out armloads of water bottles and handed one to Ondine. Ondine sipped it slowly, and Amadine flipped her off before focusing on the stepping.

Geero murmured, “Someone’s here.”

She kept her grip on him and grinned as the newcomer approached, and one of the kids noticed. The screaming was joyous, and Alejandro arrived in a rush.

Ondine got up and walked to him. “Don’t worry. It is just a friend who has been travelling. She returned, and the kids are ecstatic.”

“Where was she?”

Ondine sighed. “I think the term isfinding herself. We were free, and she wanted to use that freedom, so she bought a motorcycle and left. We have gotten occasional notices that she was fine and living in some fascinating places.”

“Really?”
