They sport similar cropped hair and are dressed in black combat uniforms with tall boots. Their appearance reminds me of soldiers from the military packs, igniting a spark of hope in my chest.

I almost allow myself to smile when something catches my eye.

The tattoo of a sinister black spider is visible on both their necks. My gaze travels down their uniform, spotting the same symbol on their sleeves. Fear spreads through me as I recognize the mark of the Black Widow, a well-known terrorist group.

“Grab the new one,” the taller of the two women commands.

The shorter female steps inside the cell and marches toward me. Her face is a mask of cruelty as she sneers down at me. Grasping my upper arm, she hauls me to my feet.

“Oww!” I gasp as her nails dig into my skin.

The stranger proceeds to grasp my hair and tugs hard, forcing me to follow in her wake.

Despite her rough handling, I’m barely able to let out a cry. Cold awareness washes over me as I realize the extent of Jake’s treachery.

He didn’t sell me to an underground brothel house. Instead, he sought out the most dangerous terrorist group and handed me over to them.

The Black Widow is a notorious group of extremists. Their terror attacks always leave hundreds dead and injured. The reason behind their cruel acts is the radical ideal they’re intent on establishing.

The Black Widow wants to enforce the ancient laws of our society where everyone’s life is determined by their designation. People born as alphas are to be treated as a supreme race who have the right to reign over the beta population. In the same vein, those who’re born as omegas are seen as weak. Their existence is solely for the alphas’ pleasure and entertainment.

Our present society treats every designation as equal. A talented beta is allowed to hold powerful positions while omegas are treasured and protected. Kidnapping us, using dominance over us, and hurting us is seen as a criminal offense.

It took years of struggle and bloodshed to mold our society into what it is today. The Black Widow is hellbent on destroying the peace and stability that we’ve sacrificed so much for.

The female soldier drags me down the long, narrow corridor, giving me a chance to see more of my surroundings. What I thought was a cell was really a cage. Several of them line both sides of the passageway and are filled with omegas of varying ages.

We pass by a cage with children. Among them, I spot a few boys. They’re all horribly thin with pale faces. Dirt coats their skins as well as their coarse blond hair.

“Keep walking,” my captor spits, kicking me behind the knee.

A gasp escapes me as my leg buckles, pushing me down to the ground.

“Get up, clumsy bitch!” she snaps, pulling me up by my hair.

She’s being nasty even when I’m complying with her orders. A part of me wants to scream and throw a tantrum but my insides are too frozen from panic and fear. Everything from the dimly lit corridors to the silent stares of the caged omegas feels like a nightmare.

There’s no way this could all be real.

There’s no way Jake could send me to this hellish place.

Ithasto be a dream.

In my desperation, I bring my hand closer to my face and bite into my wrist.

“What the fuck’s wrong with you?” the female soldier shouts, pulling my hand away.

Crescent marks cover my skin, showing me the spots where my teeth sank into my flesh. This is not a dream, I realize as desperation floods my chest, making me reel.

“Keep walking!” the female beta barks at me and pushes me.

I’m soon led into a low-ceilinged hallway. This area is more illuminated than the place where the omegas are kept. Light fixtures run along the corridor, reminding me of old, underground tunnels. There are no windows in sight anywhere and it takes me another second to realize that we’re literally underground.

“Where exactly are we?” I ask.

“Shut up and keep walking,” my keeper snaps.

I’m pushed and dragged through a network of passageways until we’re standing before a short flight of stairs.
