My eyes widen as a sudden realization takes hold of me. Could they be my true mates? It’s incredibly rare for people to come across them but everything changes the moment you meet them.

Lowering my head into Seth’s hoodie, I inhale deeply. Warmth and safety steal through me at once, calming me.

It’s one of the most prominent signs of a true mate.

The moment we’re scent-matched, their perfumes register themselves in our minds, allowing us to track them in a room full of other alphas. Even though Seth and his brothers use de-scenters, I can still acutely sense each of their unique scents.

A new emotion flares inside me as my realization hits me in the face.

Seth, Oliver, and Simon are my true mates.

I want to be close to them but since they’re not around, I opt for the next best option.

Walking out into the hallway, I go inside Simon and Oliver’s room.

Instead of sneaking out their clothes, I aim for the pillows and cushions on their bed. The fresh scent of green tea lingering on them makes me smile.

If an alpha is your true mate, you’ll be able to pick up on the faintest trace of their scents. Just being in their room is enough for me to feel their presence.

My heart races in my chest. Warmth swells inside me, making me yearn for their company.

I wish they’d come back already, I think, grabbing a stack of pillows from the bed.

Armed with my loot, I head back to my room.

I arrange the pillows near the headrest and spread the hoodie on the bed before lying on top of it. A crooning noise escapes my lips as I rub my body all over the cushions and the hoodie, marking my skin with their scents.

Comfort and safety steal through me but I still don’t feel tired enough for a nap. Wondering how to spend the time, I reach for the phone in my pocket.

Opening a search app, I type in the words “Black Widow”.

At once, a list of articles and videos comes up on the screen.

An icy chill spreads through me but I force myself to open the topmost news article.

My eyes latch onto the various photographs instead of the text. They show parts of a destroyed forest, groups of captured men being led into military vans, and displays of guns, grenades, and combat helicopters.

I knew the Black Widow was an extremist militant group but had no idea they were powerful enough to have so much weaponry. Their arsenal was as impressive as our military’s.

The article goes on to say how powerful and influential bureaucrats have been involved in financing the terrorist group. One name, in particular, stands out.

Colonel Lieutenant Nox Callahan.

He has been identified as their main leader and the force behind the Black Widow. His family lineage has been traced back to those who’d viciously opposed the new regime where betas and omegas were given the same civil rights as the noble alphas.

The man hid his intentions while serving in the military. He used his position and influence to bury evidence and shield the insurgents.

Callahan’s photograph is displayed in the article. A hint of recognition goes through me as I stare into the man’s cruel black eyes.

I remember going to a party that was hosted by this man. Jake took me there soon after we became steady. He introduced me to several men from the military that evening. Even though I didn’t care for any of them, Jake insisted I behaved my best with them. He’d even chosen the dress I’d wear for the occasion.

I thought Jake wanted to impress those men so that they’d help him with his career at the senator’s office. Only now I’m realizing that he was parading me before them, trying to gauge their interest in me. He’d already made his decision to sell me!

Cold washes over me as Jake’s intentions for me become clearer than ever before. How could I be so blind in the face of a monster like him?

Glancing down at my phone, I continue reading.

The article goes on to speculate that there are others like Callahan who’ve been secretly supporting the Black Widow. They’re intent on destroying our peaceful society and bringing back the ancient order that formed social classes based on people’s designations.
