A heavy breath leaves me. “I don’t know. If we call it fate, it’d mean that Rory’s misfortune brought her to us.”

Oliver takes off his shirt and throws it at me. “That’s bullshit. It’s her luck that she found us at the right time. Can you imagine what could’ve happened if Seth wasn’t the one who found her when she went into heat?”

An omega’s perfume during her heat is so potent and addictive, it drives alphas out of control. They can be driven so wild, they’ll end up hurting her. Sometimes, their bites can bind an unwilling omega to them, causing more harm and heartbreak to her.

This is the reason most omegas go through a courting ritual with their alpha before mating during their heat. The growing relationship allows the alpha to become more caring toward their mate and stay in control.

It was dangerous for Rory to go into heat in the middle of the woods. A lesser alpha could’ve seriously hurt her. Even the beta soldiers could’ve been driven wild, causing them to attack her.

“I guess you’re right,” I relent. “It was luck that brought Rory to us.”

Oliver and I quickly strip down to our boxers.

“We should get a bigger bed so that Rory can fit in between us,” Oliver says, slipping under the covers.

My mind immediately conjures an image of Rory curled up on the bed between me and Oliver. My cock throbs as intense desire courses through me.

“I know that look very well,” Oliver says, slapping me in the face with a pillow. “If I find you jerking off in the middle of the night, I’ll kick you out of bed.”

“I’m not fourteen anymore,” I mutter, getting under the covers beside him. “And, it happenedonetime.”

He scoffs and turns away from me. “Good night, jerk-face.”

“Sleep tight, butt-face,” I retort, closing my eyes.

Just knowing that Rory is in the next room makes me relax. Sleep comes easily tonight and I’m lost in dreamland within seconds.

The room is still dark when my eyes slowly blink open. I shift under the covers, my foot hitting Oliver’s shin. He makes a noise but it soon turns into a snore.

Dang! I’ve got to pee, I realize as my sleep fades.

Muttering curses under my breath, I sit up and drag my body out of bed. Seth left the hallway lights on, so it’s easier to make my way to the bathroom at the other end of the corridor.

Feeling more awake on the way back, I decide to sneak a peek at Rory.

I push open the door gently, expecting her to be sleeping peacefully. Instead, I find her sobbing and crying for help.

“Rory!” I call out, rushing to her side.

She doesn’t respond. Her body twists horribly, her hands and toes curling tightly as she continues sobbing.

Panic strikes me but I swallow it down. Kneeling beside the bed, I move away the dark strands that curtain her face.

Her eyes are screwed shut as she writhes on the bed. It’s a moment before I realize she’s having a nightmare.

“Rory!” I call loudly. “Rory, wake up.”

My voice isn’t enough to rouse her from whatever nightmare she’s trapped in. Out of options, I grab her shoulders and shake her hard.

Her eyes finally fly open, staring around the room wildly before they lock on me. My anxious face is reflected in those silvery pools as she stares back at me.

“It’s me, Rory,” I say, giving her another shake to make her fully awake. “Look! It’s Simon.”

“Simon?” Her lips tremble as consciousness finally descends into her eyes. “Simon!” She pounces on me, wrapping her arms tightly around my neck.

“Hey, it’s okay,” I tell her, gently rubbing her back. “You’re safe now. You’re okay. We’re all here to protect you.”

Loud, hard sobs wrack through her fragile body as she hangs onto me.
