“Oh,” I say, feeling a tinge of sadness. “I’m so sorry.”

“It’s all right,” he says with a small smile. “It’s been close to five years since she left us. I bet she’d be happy if she knew how I was using her wisdom to buy clothes for my mate.”

My mate. These two words send my heart racing.

Jake never liked using the word even though we’d dating for months. He said the term was too intimate and we weren’t there yet.

Why is it so easy for Seth and his brothers to use the word without flinching?

They’re your true mates, a voice whispers in my head. They’re not afraid to own up to the truth in their hearts.

Warmth floods my chest. No other alpha has ever shown me as much sincerity as they have. They’re not interested in playing any games with me. They’re direct with me, always telling me and showing me how much they desire me.

“Come on,” Seth says, wrapping his arm around my waist. “You must be hungry.” Guiding me down the staircase, he leads me along the hallway that leads into the kitchen.

Oliver and Simon’s raised voice filter into the corridor, making me halt in my steps.

“How hard could it have been to shout for me?” Oliver asks in an accusing tone. “I’m not a light sleeper and I could’ve reached Rory’s room within seconds.”

“How many times do I have to tell you?” Simon hisses. “I wasn’t thinking about you! Rory needed me at that moment. I had to be there for her instead of wondering how Oli would feel the next morning.”

“You’re just making excuses!”

“I’m fucking not!”

Capturing my wrist, Seth leads me inside the kitchen.

Immediate silence falls over the place the moment we step inside the room.

“Rory,” Oliver blurts, staring at me with surprised, wide eyes.

“Hi,” I say shyly.

Both Simon and Oliver are also dressed in identical maroon uniforms. Their similar hairstyles make them look like each other’s clones. Attired in their military garb, they look just as dashing as their elder brother.

“For fuck’s sake!” Seth suddenly roars, making me jump. “You morons have burned the eggs!”

That’s when I recognize the characteristic smell of burning eggs. Seth scrapes manically at the pan on the stove but the smoking mess is beyond saving.

Oliver rounds on Simon. “You were supposed to watch the eggs!”

“No, you were!” Simon retaliates back.

“We’re going to have to start all over again,” Seth mutters, pulling the pan off the flame.

“I don’t mind eating cereal,” I say at once.

Three pairs of eyes turn in my direction.

“There’s no way we’re feeding you cold cereal,” Seth says, banging a new pan on the stove.

“Yep. We promised Mayor Bailley we’d take care of you,” Oliver says in an unusually grim tone. “He’d never forgive us if he knew we weren’t doing our job.”

“Big words, Bonehead,” Seth mutters, looking inside the fridge. “We don’t have any eggs. You’ve ruined them all.”

Oliver cringes, glancing toward Simon.

A look of understanding spreads on Simon’s face, followed by a glint of mischief in his eyes.
