It’s a moment before I realize it’s the TV. A male anchor is reporting news about the current state of investigations regarding the Black Widow.

I don’t make a sound as I enter the living room.

Rory is curled up on the couch and staring at the TV. She’s wearing one of the dresses I bought her and is wrapped in one of my old hoodies.

The sight sends warmth washing over me. Rory is safe and looks utterly comfortable in our home. Feeling lighter than before, I walk toward her.

Sensing my presence, Rory stirs. A surprised smile blossoms on her pretty face as her gaze settles on me.

“Seth!” she cries out and jumps off the couch.

Before I know it, she’s running toward me. Her arms wrap around me tightly as she hugs me.

Surprise spreads through me as her soft body molds against mine. “Why didn’t you tell me you were coming home today?” Her nose skims along the bit of naked skin under my open collar, inhaling my scent.

The change in her demeanor is astonishing.

I remember her being withdrawn and moody. Her gaze used to be full of hate and disgust back when we were living in the old hunting lodge by the woods. I never thought she could ever welcome me with so much excitement and warmth.

“Did Simon and Oliver know you were coming back?” she asks, gazing up at me. There’s a spark of indignance on her face that melts my insides.

“They had an idea but I didn’t tell them when I was coming back home,” I tell her.

“Oh.” The annoyance drains away from her face as she smiles again. “You have no idea how much I missed you.”

“You did?” I ask, failing to hide my surprise.

“Isn’t it obvious? I don’t feel fully at home when you’re not around.”

Warmth bubbles inside me. “So, you’re starting to feel at home here?” I ask in a gentle voice.

Her cheeks turn a lovely pink as she nods. “I like it here.”

Reaching out, I caress her soft, pink cheeks with the back of my hand. “I’m glad.”

Her eyes close at my touch as she leans in closer.

The wolf within me howls with excitement. Rory’s every little gesture is turning it wild. I want to claim her sweet mouth right now and carry her upstairs to bed right away.

Control yourself, I tell myself sternly.

Rory is just starting to break out of her shell.

When I first met her, she’d been full of hate, rage, and disgust. She didn’t trust me one bit because I was an alpha. Her expectations of me were pathetically low. She’d simply been waiting for me to betray her.

Simon and Oliver did an amazing job of making her feel safe and protected in our home. Rory’s cheeks are fuller than the last time I saw her. She’s still terribly skinny but she’s starting to look healthier than before.

Her growing beauty makes me want toconsumeher.

Rory is my mate, I remind myself sternly. While I’d love to claim her in every way possible, my topmost priority is her happiness and well-being. I have to stay in control of my urges to make sure she’s safe.

“What have you been watching?” I ask, hoping to diffuse some of the tension in my body.

A grim look descends into her eyes.

“They’re saying the leader of the Black Widow is missing,” she says, looking anxious. “Nox Callahan...I’ve seen that man before.” Catching hold of my wrist, she tugs at me.

I follow her to the couch and sit down before the TV.
