Seth comes forward and sits down on the edge of the bed. “Rory, we’re doing our best to keep them safe. Dr. Roman and his team work around the clock to take care of them. It’ll take months to see any real improvement in their mental states but itwillhappen.”

“He’s right,” says Simon. “Even though you have us, you’re still in the process of recovering from your trauma. They need time to heal just as you do.”

“Saying sorry for what you went through will never be enough,” says Oliver. “We can only show how much we care for you and the others who’ve suffered under the Black Widow. We won’t abandon these women. They’ll receive the best care in the world until they’re well enough to leave this facility.”

“Let us take you home,” Seth says, tightening his hold on my hands.

“Hold up,” Raiden says, interrupting me before I can answer him.

“What’s wrong?” Seth asks, frowning.

“I want Rory to see something before she leaves.” Raiden meets my gaze and smiles warmly. “The situation isn’t as hopeless as you think.”

Seth looks back at me. “What would you like to do?”

“I’ll see what Raiden wants to show me,” I say, climbing off the cot. “After that, we can leave.”

“Raiden, are you sure about this?” Simon asks.

“Of course,” he answers with a confident grin. “I’d never do anything to harm Rory. You guys know that.”

Simon gives a nod and steps aside so that Raiden can lead the way out of the room.

Armed soldiers guard every corner, watching our group as he guides us along several corridors and down a staircase.

Leading us to a tall door, he opens it.

To my surprise, we’re presented with a glimpse of distant hills and a vast green field that stretches toward the horizon.

Raiden steps out and we follow him.

Weak afternoon sunshine streams down on us as we walk across the green expanse that surrounds the building. A cool breeze blows past us, carrying with it the joyful shrieks of children.

“Look over there,” Simon says, turning my attention toward a group of children playing tag.

The kids are completely absorbed in their game. They pay absolutely no mind to us or the dozen armed guards who’re patrolling the area.

“These are some of the kids we rescued from those underground cells,” says Raiden.

Loud giggles and laughter rise all around us as they continue with their game.

Seeing them being happy and excited brings a smile to my face.

These are the same children who’d been locked away in those underground cages. They suffered the same cruelty as us, but they don’t seem to have forgotten all about it.

“We believe they were too young for the drugs,” Raiden says quietly. “That’s why they’ve avoided suffering withdrawal symptoms like the older omegas.”

“These kids started running around and exploring the moment we brought them out of there,” Seth says from beside me. “It felt like they were seeing the sky, the soil, and the trees for the very first times in their lives.”

“For the very first time?”

“We believe they were born in captivity,” Oliver says in a low, grim tone. “They were never given a chance to step outside those underground vaults and grew up thinking that was the whole world.”

“They finally have the chance to see the real world,” says Simon. “And, they’re using it fucking well. They come out to play here every day, soaking in as much sun and fresh air as they can get.”

“What’s going to happen to them in the future?” I ask, turning toward Raiden.

“We’ll put them through a special fostering program,” he replies. “They’re especially geared toward young omegas who’ve undergone trafficking and similar situations.”
