“He’s an ass,” Dad says with a huff. “He has been trying to pass a law that’d make it mandatory for every omega to attend a training institution.”

“What’s wrong with it if they could make these special academies more affordable to families with young omegas?”

Dad makes an annoyed noise. “It only sounds good in theory. What would happen is that the government will have a list of every omega that’s being born. It’ll make it easy for them to keep track of every individual that way.”

“Is it a matter of privacy?”

“It’s not about privacy, honey,” Dad says in a grim tone. “Who’s to say the government won’t control what happens in these institutions?”

“Are you saying they could use such places to groom young omegas?”

“That’s exactly what could happen if you let the wrong sort of people get into power,” Dad says in a quiet voice. “You have no idea how many government officials have been supporting the Black Widow and other such radical groups. They want those awful laws back in place to control the omegas and keep the beta population suppressed.”

The mention of the Black Widow sends a cold tingle down my spine. No one can know the extent of their cruelty toward omegas more than me.

Even though my dad’s a politician, I’ve never paid any attention to politics. Only now I’m realizing the importance of knowing what the government is up to with its reforms and laws. It’s a sobering thought to know how people in power can affect my life drastically.

“You invited this awful senator to our home?” I ask slowly.

“Why not?” he says with a cackle. “Let him come and see that a beta guy is also capable of running a successful business as well as playing politics with the top guns of the state.”

“When are you having this party?” I ask. “Your birthday isn’t until next week but you never have it on the actual date.”

He chuckles. “I want to spend all my birthdays with you, sweetheart.” Clearing his throat, he adds, “The party’s happening this weekend.”

“That’s just two days away!”

“I know.”

“You should’ve told me sooner!”

“Wait...are you coming?”

“Yeah,” I say, smiling. “I want to bring Seth, Oliver, and Simon with me.”

“Of course, you should bring them too! I wasn’t sure if you were up to attending one of my boring parties. Last time, you got sick with all the crowd, so I wasn’t sure about asking you, but if you’re okay now, I’d love to see you, honey.”

“I want to get back to being among other people,” I say. “With Seth and his brothers, I’d feel confident enough to get through the evening without losing my mind.”

“So, they’re treating you all right, then?”

“Dad! You always ask me this. You already know my answer!”

A loud sigh escapes him. “I didn’t ask you enough when you were dating that jerk. I won’t make the same mistake again.”

“Dad...”

“So, it’s decided! I’m seeing you and your mates on Friday.”

“Yeah.”

“I’ve got to go and talk to the caterers now. How about I catch up with you later?”

“Sure.”

“I love you, sweetheart.”

“Love you too, Dad.”
