The darkened interior of my room brings me comfort but the next moment, I detect a familiar scent. A cloying scent of cinnamon hits me, reminding me of the last person I want to think of right now.

“Hello, darling,” a familiar voice speaks out in the darkness. “Long time no see.”

The lights come on, blinding me for a moment.

Blinking my eyes, I focus on the figure that’s sprawled on my bed.

“Jake,” I gasp, staring at my traitorous ex-boyfriend.

A creepy smile spreads on his face as he waves at me.

His sudden appearance in my bedroom baffles me. “What the hell are you doing here?”

“What else could I be doing? I’ve been waiting for you, Rory.” Climbing from the bed, he stretches his arms over his head and approaches me slowly. “I almost dozed off waiting for you. Where have you been until now, Sugar?”

Warning bells go off in my head.

This man shouldn’t be here.

Dad might not know the extent of Jake’s treachery but he’s aware that we broke up. He knows Jake’s the reason I looked like a walking skeleton and was depressed for weeks. There’s no way Dad would ever invite him to our home even if it was for fucking politics!

“You’re not supposed to be here,” I say, struggling to stay calm.

“Mayor Bailey didn’t send me a personal invite but that doesn’t mean I can’t be someone’s plus one,” he says, chuckling like he’s the funniest guy on the planet.

“You’re not welcome here,” I say, balling my fists tighter. “Get out right now!”

“Now, now, darling,” he says, reaching toward me.

“Don’t touch me!” I snap, slapping his hand away.

“Ouch! How cold of you, Rory.”

“There are a lot of people downstairs, so I don’t want to make a scene. Just walk out quietly and there won’t be any trouble.”

An amused chuckle escapes him. “Are you kicking me out?”

“Be glad I’m not calling security.”

He suddenly approaches me at high speed and grabs me by my neck. Pushing me against a wall, he breathes down on my face. He’s so enraged, tiny red veins pop against the whites of his eyes.

“How dare you speak to me this way?” he hisses. “I’m your fucking alpha!”

His declaration of being my alpha sends a wave of heat through me that burns away my fear and desperation. How dare he come into my dad’s house and bully me? I’m done being his little bitch who lived only to please him.

I scoff. “You’re not my alpha, you fucking traitor.”

Surprise floods his gaze.

“So, it’s true, huh?” he asks, tightening his fingers around my throat. “You’ve holed up with a couple of military captains and fucking them for protection? Are they your alphas now, little Rory?”

His knowledge of my whereabouts sends another thrill of danger and warning through me. How could he know about Seth, Oliver, and Simon?

Jake is slowly choking me. His demanding gaze is forcing me to bend to his will but I refuse to back down.

Deep within, I have no idea where I’m getting the strength to hold onto my dignity and not simply break down before this man and beg for him to leave me alone.

It’s the mate bond, a voice whispers in my mind.No one other than your true mates can influence you.
