His chuckles fade away. “Where are the other omegas, Rory?” he asks with a calculating look on his face. “Tell me what happened to them.”

“I don’t know.” There’s no way someone like Jake can ever know where Millie and the recovering women are being hidden. He’ll do whatever he can to steal them away and put them through the same hell again.

“Don’t lie to me,” he hisses. “Tell me how you got out of there. The soldiers who barged into the Black Widow’s hideout must’ve helped you and the others. Where did they take you? Where are they hiding the others?”

“I don’t know what you’re talking about,” I mutter, looking away from him.

His fingers clutch my chin in a hard hold. It’s so painful, it brings tears to my eyes but I refuse to shed them as I glare back at him.

Breathing harshly, he suddenly loosens his hold and steps back. “He’ll be angry if I bruise you,” he mumbles under his breath. “I can’t afford to disappoint him again.”

“What’re you talking about? Who are you working for, Jake?”

“You’ll see.” He takes several steps away from me. “If you want to keep your dad and your mates from seeing the truth of who you are, you’ll listen to what I say.”

“The truth of who I am?”

He brandishes his cell phone. “They’ll see the clip I just showed you.”

Utter defeat spreads through me. While Seth, Oliver, and Simon know the truth about what I suffered in captivity, seeing the proof with their own eyes would hurt them terribly.

My mates are part of the Burton Pack. They’re among the most elite military packs in the country. I can only imagine the shame and dishonor that’ll fall on them if people knew their mate was a whore who catered to several men at a time.

My eyes squeeze shut from imagining the pain of punishment Seth’s dads would unleash on him and his brothers. Honor is the one thing they’ll never compromise with. They’d rather die than be humiliated.

And, Dad...

If he knew what happened to me during my disappearance, he’d be shattered. After Mom passed away, he did his best to protect me and care for me. He’ll think he’s failed both me and my mom if he learned I’d been sold off to the Black Widow right under his nose.

This won’t be the only blow Dad receives. If Jake presents the twisted version of the truth, he’ll lose the confidence and trust of his voters. His hard-earned career as the mayor of Maplewood would crumble within hours.

“There’s no point in thinking so hard about this,” Jake says in a grim tone. “Walk out of this room and go into the backyard. You’ll meet two women who’ll lead you outside the gates. They’ll take you to our boss.”

“Your boss?”

“He wants you, Rory,” he says. “He’s been coveting you for a long time now. After seeing you as a captive, his desire for you has turned into an obsession.”

“Who is he? How does he even know me?”

“He’s known you for a long time now,” he says in a grim tone. “He saw you with me at Nox Callahan’s party and he’s been interested in you since then.”

“Is it Major Kelso?” I ask.

“It’s not Kelso,” Jake says with a shake of his head. “But heisa powerful man. Be obedient to him and he’ll leave your family alone.”

“He must be someone powerful like Callahan,” I say, staring into Jake’s eyes.

“Yes. Callahan has escaped the raid, so the military will never find any information on the people who’ve been supporting the Black Widow. My boss’s position remains strong and untouched.”

Jake has no idea that Callahan has been caught. Just as Seth predicted, they’ve allowed themselves to relax, thinking Callahan escaped the raid.

“For old time’s sake, I’ll leave you with one piece of advice,” Jake says, drawing my attention back to him. “My boss has the power to harm both your dad and those chumps from the military. Don’t disrespect him in any way and be obedient to him at all times.”

The past few months flash before my eyes. I’ve never been as happy as the days I’ve spent with Seth, Oliver, and Simon. Their love for me was starting to heal me.

I thought life was giving me a second chance.

At this very moment, I can choose to ignore Jake’s threats. I can scream and bring people rushing up here in no time. They’ll get Jake out of my room and home within minutes.
